Rachel wasn't an unnecessary death. In fact, if Nolan and Goyer planned the first two movies in advance of making "Batman Begins" (and I'm pretty sure they did), I think Rachel was almost completely invented for the sole purpose of being killed as a means of motivating Bruce on his quest (and Harvey Dent eventually).
That character was clearly a plot device more than anything. Just about all she does in the two movies (especially in the first one) is say exposition to advance the plot. She was always much more a catalyst for plot developments than a plausible romantic interest.
I imagine they may re-design the Batsuit again for the next movie and if they do, I wish they'd make it more simplistic than the one in "The Dark Knight". There's just too much armor plate and mesh shit on it. And it would be nice if they made the symbol black in contrast to the armor's gray so it doesn't just blend into the armor.
