Gary Olman: "BATMAN 3 to start filming by next year for summer 2011"

Gary Oldman: "BATMAN 3 to start filming by next year for summer 2011"

That's all verbatim, apparently. ComingSoon and AintItCool are reporting that while on the Comic-Con panel today whilst promoting his film The Book of Eli with Denzel Washington that there are plans to start shooting the next Batman installment by next year for a summer 2011 release.

Christopher Nolan is currently shooting the sci-fi actioner Inception starring Leonardo DiCaprio in Toyko due in theaters July 2010. Filming would ostensibly need to commence around that time for a summer 2011 release, however Nolan spent somewhere between 7-8 months in principal photography on both Batman films so I'm not so sure about this. Summer 2011 seems a bit too soon, without nearly the amount of prep time Nolan usually requires.

Urg. I hope they end the series with The Dark Knight. A sequel is sure to be a letdown...

Well, here's hoping they can avoid the "3rd film curse" that seems to plague most superhero movies. As long as Nolan and co. are involved though, I'm fairly optimistic. But I do agree, it seems he's going to be quite busy in the coming years. If giving Batman 3 the time and energy it deserves means pushing it to summer of 2012, I'd personally be willing to wait the extra year.

I thought for sure we wouldn't see a Nolan-directed sequel until summer 2012. He usually spends two and a half years working on these Batman films and the timeframe from when he finishes Inception to the expected summer 2011 release date of the next Batman just seems too short for me. Who knows, maybe Gary Oldman was wrong.

Re: Gary Olman: "BATMAN 3 to start filming by next year for summer 201

Maybe they're bringing Brett Ratner in. :p

^^^^^
Don't even joke about that!!! :scream: :scream: :scream:

;)

Re: Gary Olman: "BATMAN 3 to start filming by next year for summer 201

^ Or he gave away too much and his agent got a nasty note from WB/Nolan which has been known to happen every so often when too much is given away.

As long as they don't force-in the storyline about the alien symbiote taking control of Bruce Wayne or have one have any characters incinerated by their lover's split personality, I think we're good.

Re: Gary Olman: "BATMAN 3 to start filming by next year for summer 201

I'm sure it'll be summer 2012. Nolan would need more time to move ahead and it's highly unlikely that Warners would release Green Lantern and the next Batman in the same summer, especially a summer that's already jam-packed with superhero films. Most likely pre-production on the next Batman is planned to start next year with shooting to commence in 2011.

Agreed.

If the right people are involved then I can definitely see this working. There's obviously potential to extend the story a little more.

I'll believe it when WB or Nolan actually say something.

Re: Gary Olman: "BATMAN 3 to start filming by next year for summer 201

Oldman has backtracked, saying it may be a year or two longer in an interview with "Quint" at AICN, while Christian Bale has now confirmed - or at least agreed with - the original report that they'll shoot next year for a 2011 release.

Take your pick...

Re: Gary Olman: "BATMAN 3 to start filming by next year for summer 201

2011, 2011, 2011.

I believe in Christopher Nolan.

Bale hasn't confirmed it. That report is from OK (a British tabloid which is never a trustworthy source for casting or production news). They just say that Bale has confirmed that he'll be playing Batman for a third time and then they quote Oldman as saying it'll shoot next year. There's nothing from Bale agreeing with Oldman about that timescale.

They're keeping the scene where Bruce Wayne dances down the street though.

Re: Gary Olman: "BATMAN 3 to start filming by next year for summer 201

I think Nolan can avoid the Film 3 Curse; I can't wait to see what he comes up with, especially since The Dark Knight left me hanging, quite frankly. I want to see Gotham's faith in Batman restored--or destroyed utterly, whichever works best dramatically. :)

Re: Gary Olman: "BATMAN 3 to start filming by next year for summer 201

Things to avoid in the Batman Threequel, if the curse of the Third Superhero Movie is anything to go by:

Batman goes bad (Superman 3, Spider-man 3, Jean Grey in X3)

Batman gets new director (X3, Superman 3. Yes, I know Dick Lester directed Superman 2, but 3 was the first one without input from Richard Donner and boy does it show)

Batman gets too many plots shoehorned in (X3's virus, Jean's return from the dead, Spider-man's Venom, symbiont and Sandman storylines)

Batman gets his backstory retconned (X3's flashbacks and de-aging scenes, 'Phoenix' backstory, Spider-man 3's 'Flint Marko really killed your uncle' revelation)

Batman sees supporting characters get unnecessarily killed (Jean, Prof X and Cyclops in X3, Harry Osborne in Spider-man 3)

Batman gets played for laughs (Superman 3, Spider-man 3, some of Batman Forever)

Batman sees great character actors get wasted (James Cromwell in Spider-man 3, Bill Duke in X3)

Batman gets crap villains (Superman 3), miscast villains (Batman Forever), misused villains (Venom in Spider-man 3) and silly villains (Vinnie Jones in X3). Sort the villainy out, Mr Nolan!

Have I missed anything?

Re: Gary Olman: "BATMAN 3 to start filming by next year for summer 201

I think these actors are talking out of their asses and don't know shit. Nolan is so fussy, stubborn, and meticulous, he doesn't even want to admit that he's agreed to directing the next Batman film till the last minute.

His reluctance about it, resulting in him being the last one to confirm signing on, drove me crazy last time. I started worrying that his brother or Goyer would take over directing, so I'm quite certain he won't let anyone rush him into having it ready for 2011. I guess you could say he likes to play things close to the chest. :)

I'm sure after "Inception" he'll take his sweet time with writing the next Batman movie (or whatever his next movie will be) and won't have whatever he's making after "Inception" ready for any sooner than 2012.

Great list, Captain. Very thoughtful, spot-on, and funny.

That was the (second) best part of of Superman 3 and wasn't the problem with the movie.

Already had that with TDK. :p

Batman gets his backstory retconned (X3's flashbacks and de-aging scenes, 'Phoenix' backstory, Spider-man 3's 'Flint Marko really killed your uncle' revelation)
I wouldn't call anything in the prologue in X3 as a retcon. Spidey 3, however, I am totally with you on this.

Batman sees supporting characters get unnecessarily killed (Jean, Prof X and Cyclops in X3, Harry Osborne in Spider-man 3)
Calling Rachel Dawes?

Batman gets played for laughs (Superman 3, Spider-man 3, some of Batman Forever)
In fairness, Superman was played for laughs in 1 and 2 as well. The campy nature was a part of that series.

Batman sees great character actors get wasted (James Cromwell in Spider-man 3, Bill Duke in X3)
You know, I am in the minority, but I really thought Michael Caine and Morgan Freemen were very under utilized in TDK.

Have I missed anything?
No Bat-Nipples?
