Watching WNMHGB the other day, i thought if Gary Mitchell should be in the movie. Anyone know how far prior to TOS it is set? All we know is "during Kirk/Spock's" academy days, which might allow for Gary Mitchell to be in it. In WNMHGB it is stated that Mitchell and Kirk have known each other for 15 years prior to the episode and that Kirks class was a tough one (indicating that in our vernacular, Kirk might have been a TA when Mitchell was an undergrad). If we assume the movie might take place during the second or third year on of Kirks Academy days, then shouldnt we see Mitchell?

In all likelihood the film will focus on the iconic characters only. That's why Pike will only be a cameo, if rumors are true. Gary Mitchel was a one-off, very important to Kirk's backstory but no one that the general public will know. He might be there, but I'll be very surprised.
I think they could do it without making it fanwank.

If this movie is full of Fanwanks, than it definately will suck. I can just see it now. Let's have Finnigin in the movie as well just to beat up Kirk to make everyone happy. God I hope it doesn't come to that.

If there is a way to do it in a small cameo that is not intrusive, then yes.
He should at least get a cameo. But I'd much prefer he were an integral part of the plot--I'd rather see him than Pike, really. (Not that I don't want to see Pike...)

Let's extrapolate. Kirk's 35 in season 3; Chekov probably is 24. Run Kirk back 13 years to age 22 when he might have graduated from the Academy, and Chekov is 11.

If this is taking place around the time Kirk takes command of the Enterprise, then he should be in it. I would much rather him have a big part than only have a cameo...I think a cameo, by definintion, would seem 'tagged on' to the film.
If the movie takes place during the Academy days, they can safely keep him in the background with a cameo. If the movie takes place with Kirk taking command of the Enterprise, the his presence becomes necessary like Pike's, Kelso's, Piper's, etc. unless they doubletalk an explanation up to cover their absence. (Mitchell wasn't the First officer, Spock was, Mcoy was on leave and Piper was just a temp, etc.)
Totally depends on the needs of the script. If it requires that Kirk have a trusted human buddy from his Academy days on hand, so he can reflect on the quirks of the Vulcan he's just started having to understand, they'll put Mitchell there.
If the script calls for someone in that role; a buddy of Kirk's that's not Spock or Bones, then sure. Why not? This characters been in exactly one episode. It's not like there's 40 years of history that the casual fans absolutely need to know in order to follow the movie. He's just a buddy of Kirks.
