In my opinion, people need to get past this "it will never be as good as this era" of Star Trek because that's a complete and total dead end. It's setting you up for failure and disappointment, and the constant haranguing of the doom and gloom 20s (like humanity never had it before; please...I've heard about the end of the world for 30 years.) Instead, to apprach a series on it's own terms and see if you like it will make it a way more positive experience than "Well, it will never be like TOS."

Nothing was like TOS. TNG wasn't like TOS! TNG sucked at first because it tried to disconnect itself yet used TOS plot points without the charm of the TOS cast. When it found it's footing and became it's own thing then it worked for many.

Man, I will never know how people find the prequels leading in to the OT. The PT feels way more depressing and annoying and makes the OT characters look bad, especially Obi-Wan.

Yes, yes. The 20s suck. Life was so much better back when...

You don't know how many series I've started to watch the recent years and then quit after 5-6 episodes because they are so bad.

NCIS Hawaii was the latest. Downright horrible.

As for Star Wars, I don't find the three prequels that bad. At least much better and less character destroying than a lot of recent stuff I've watched.

There were a lot of bad things before the 2020's but the 2020's really sucks. Talk about boring decade.
And no, I don't belong to those "End of The World" dystopians but I have to endure having it thrown in my face every time I watch a new series or movie. :(

Star Trek could be a contradicttion to all that if someone cpould come up with a good new series.

Hate to break it to you, but a lot of folks out there think Lower Decks/Prodigy/Strange New Worlds are pretty good. If that's not to your taste then that's not to your taste, but that doesn't make them bad.

I agre with what you have written but I still think that it was a big mistake to make that retro series. That decision ruined Star Trek and we are still suffering from it.

I don't think making a retro series was a wrong decision in itself. The way they went about it was, though (in my view, of course). They tried to give us more of the same: 'alien per week' stories of a Starfleet crew that functionally had nearly all the technology they would have 200 years later, i.e. negating the (narrative) reason for shifting the setting to the 22nd century in the first place.

Beautifully stated. Not to mention that ridiculous "temporal cold war", which could have been in any era, and that guy yakking about "Federation" this and "Federation" that. There was no Federation then, that was practically the point.

I could take more boring from my 2020.
Might have been interesting for the world, given the pandemic and the "pick the lesser if two evils" election. But the day to day existence with no work, no hobbies, no socializing, and no anything else was quite the snoozefest.

I still worked.

And the aftermath on mental health will ensure I have work for the rest of my career.

When someone says a show is bad, just assume they mean they don't like it.

I know this intellectually, but I'm still tired of people presenting their opinions as objective fact. Not just here, but generally.

As more than one person has said historically, "If you can't say what you mean, how can you be expected to mean what you say?"

Lower Decks is a cartoon and Prodigy is animated, if I'm correct.
I haven't watched any of those yet, due to problems with finding them available. None of them are aired where I live and to stream them will cost me money I might waste on other things. not to mention that I've had bad experioences with streaming companies who have the bad habit of cancelling shows.

The same for Strange New Worlds. However, that one looks a bit more promising so if I can stream it for a fair price, I might do it.

One problem I had with ENT was that it didn't look pre-TOS at all, more like post-VOY.

As for TVshows, well you and I approach it for far different reasons so I'll take your word for it that it's all bad and character destroying.

I guess that's a matter of opinions and personal tastes.
I must admit that I do have problems with the "dark atmosphere" in many current series and movies.

That's fair, and even though I completely disagree it isn't because I think people should think like me.

It's more that It reminds me of a similar attitude I had when I was much younger, and much more avoidant of the world. I found anything grim or darker quite discomforting and tended to avoid it, to the point of not reading books and not watching shows that my friends did. I tended towards more escapist ideas, video games, Lego building, writing, etc. to avoid uncomfortable truths. Now, well, I look back and regard my attitude a bit differently and not as a positive. While I see the value of escapism to a degree, but I don't avoid the discomfort. I've adopted a more Stoic style philosophy of recognizing discomfort but not allowing it to persuade me towards avoidance.

All that to say I get your point of view to a degree. I just have seen way to much avoidance to embrace it any longer.

Mileage will vary.

This isn't a PIC spoiler so we can talk about it openly, the article linked might have some spoilers, but I would say it's only a matter of time before Harry gets that canon promotion now that powers in charge have made note about it publicly.

Hard to say. It happened in the "Endgame" AU, it happened in STO, it happened in "The Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway", and now cut content here... but not dead certain yet, more's the pity. Remember that Wesley Crusher was cut from "Nemesis", and his canonical fate turned out different. As much as it would delight me to see the "eternal ensign" crowd's dreams lying shattered on the floor in a million pieces... we still don't have a canonical fate.

Right now, I think the best chance is "Prodigy". It's revisited VOY several times, so maybe an appearance by another cast member would make sense. Harry might not be a captain yet, but I could see him as a LCDR, and maybe Adm. Janeway's first officer.
