Garak could have had his own show

The Garak spin-off we'll never have ... :(

 Excellent!

Lots of characters on DS9 are played by brilliant actors who could have had their own show. Like Quark, Garak, Weyoun, Dukat, Kai Winn etc. etc. Garak's show woulda been great, but there is a large number of other possibilities that would also be great.

I love Garak, but I doubt he would have worked in a show of his own. As another poster noted, he was so great because of his interaction with the other characters. I for one am glad that he didn't leave DS9 for his own spin off.

I really dont think that Garak could have had his own show. Back when it first started he was much more interesting as "plain simple Garak." Unfortunately by the end he had pretty much lost his edge and was even trusted with a seat on the bridge of the Defiant in a battle situation. Realistically he should have been gone after season 4 when he tried to take command of Defiants weapons and turn them on the founders. Try getting aboard an aircraft carrier and launching even ONE missile and see what happens to you. Anyway i know we have to suspend our disbelief but in the last two seasons the dialogue he was getting was pretty dumb. Anyway i just feel he lost his edge as an interesting character and should never have been so trusted to the point that hes a bridge officer in a combat situation. He was best as a grey hat, not a pure white hat.

How about one of an ensemble of the rebuilding of Cardassia?
Another premise is that Cardassia has joined the Federation and Garak is the liaison officer.

I don't think they ever fully trusted Garak. He was just "the devil you know". They could trust him insofar as their mutual interests to help each other. They couldn't trust Garak, but they could trust Garak to be Garak, and thus knew he would always act in the best interest of Cardassia. I got the impression that was the extent of the trust that they gave him. Very well-handled on the show. They easily could have botched a delicate concept like that, but they didn't.

Furthermore, his seat on the Defiant wasn't given for convenience's sake. It was given because he pro-actively came and asked for it for an honest reason, and if they didn't give him it, he would have been executed for sure and possibly tortured a lot first. That would be a cruel fate to leave anyone to. And on top of that, they owed him for helping them out a lot. Also very well-handled how he ended up on the Defiant.

As for trying to turn the Defiant's weapons on the Founders...the Federation clearly doesn't care one iota if all the Founders were to die. They agree with Garak' intention during his crime. So it stands to reason that's why his sentence was so light in regards to that. :D

Because I'd hate it if every well developed alien species joins the federation, it would simply become boring if the federation didn't have any adversaries

When would Garak have been tortured if he wasnt given a seat on the bridge of the Defiant during a major battle? The crew absilutely trusted him. You dont let somebody have a control station unless you trust them implicitly. Anyway that position could and should have been filled by a real officer.
As for the Federation not caring about the Founders, that just seems a bit silly. Worf sure seemed to care and Garak put up a hell of a fight. Whats the term for assault on a military officer? Also if Garak HAD launched the weapon, it would have committed the Federation in a big war that it wasnt ready for at the time. Sure they may have won but a lot of people would have been killed. Its not up to Garak to make that decision. He should have been thrown in jail and the key thrown away.

Priceless.

I especially like the Frasierean silhouette of Cardassia. ;)

Anyway, Garak was best as that mysterious character in the shadows. He's the enigmatic figure who steals the show, not its focus.

But a Star Trek spinoff that featured Garak once more in a recurring role would have been fun. :)

To the original subject matter. As a permanent member of an ensemble, like other Trek shows would be great.
