Games that have not aged well

A lot of the PSX-era 3D games have not held up so well.
Yup, early polygonal graphics are prone to looking dated. Hell, they looked dated shortly after release.

I've recently jumped - or rather, tried to jump - back into Medieval, it's almost unbearable.

I'm going to get lynched here, but KOTOR. I never played it when it came out, but I bought it a month or two ago. I can definitely see why people loved it back then (the story already looks pretty awesome), but I just can't get past the gameplay at all.

I actually started replaying that not too long ago as well. I actually felt that it held up pretty well. The one annoyance I do have with it though is the camera. It feels so limiting not being able to look up and down. Other then that, its gameplay really isn't that different from Dragon Age Origins.

An important distinction here, PC or Xbox? The PC's control scheme is severely atrocious, IMO. The Xbox's isn't superb either, but at least its usable.

I can't play KOTOR anymore. Between having played it to death, and the engine missing several features from newer Bioware games, it almost makes me physically ill to try to play it at all.

There are definitely two schools of thought here, then. I played KOTOR again about a year ago (on PC) and quite enjoyed it, still.

PC; the only console that I ever owned was a PS2 that I won in a startrek.com sweepstakes right before Nemesis. :shifty:

Star Wars: Jedi Knight is absolute crap at this point. Fun game back in the day (thank god for the hundreds of mods the community made), but ugh...the lightsaber combat is terrible.

Yeah, I guess some early game mechanics, in any game really, don't age so well. I think the game itself is still rather solid, but the limitations of the lightsaber really shows. Almost makes me wish for a remake on a modern engine.

My three year old loves to watch me play the old PS1 Ridge Racer games on our 46" LCD screen. The first two especially are pretty bad looking, the third and fourth are a little more acceptable, but I'm still wanting to find a nicer looking modern racing game for the PS3.

You'd probably find it in GT5, as that's one of the best looking racing games right now. Of course, it depends on what kind of game you're looking for, either a sim or arcade game. If more arcade, I'd suggest either Test Drive Unlimited, which can be had for pretty cheap right now, or Test Drive Unlimited 2.

You can really see it when you play Jedi Knight II, as well. Though the lightsabre combat can still be kinda clumsy (and in some levels, like Nar Shadda, the variety of ways to fall to your death is incredibly frustrating :scream:) the game still works reasonably well. And the duels are generally a highlight, helped by a generally creative AI.

I think we all wanted some kind of motion-sensing style gameplay or something like Die By The Sword in terms of how the lightsabers were controlled. Maybe in a future title though? The Die by the Sword games were unique in that the sword motion was entirely controlled by the motions of the mouse.

^^

I think motion sensing completely ruins games. Until there's a perfect 1:1 controller I don't think I'll be able to enjoy motion-based controllers. But then, my only experience with such was a Wii store demo, so maybe there is a perfect 1:1 movement-to-response ratio controller out there.

Recently, I booted up the old N64 and played The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. While the 3D models and environments are similar to its predecessor, I found the game increasingly difficult to look at. The bizarre world couple with the bright, almost psychedelic color pallet started to become a bit of a strain.

Shogo: Mobile Armor Division looks terrible and is a massive pain to get running on modern OSes to boot.

Baldur's Gate doesn't hold up very well, I'm afraid. Just bought it recently and even with the widescreen mod, it's a game that really shows its age. I've played old games like Arcanum recently that held up much better.

The old Ultima games like Ultima IV and Ultima V. Also any old RPG that relies on external lists and such for what letters do which thing. In these games you had a chart that showed what combination of letters on the keyboard cast which spell. It was incredibly clunky but the only way to do it at the time.

Cruisin' USA / World for the N64. At the time they looked amazing and the bugs splatting on the the screen.

But now they look like crap. Someone should remake them for modern day audiences.
