It depends on the picture, sometimes the hairstyle of the character pictured will give you a hint. The Worf picture from before, his appearance changed gradually over the 2nd season, which it was because of his uniform.
The last picture, that scene is one of my favorites when Q tries to apologize the Janeway. The cute little puppy was in that scene.
Other things that can clue in are the lighting, some early 1st season TOS episodes had a very glossy look to them.
