Okay, granted having molten gold (or molten anything) poured over your head would be disasterous - shock, skin and hair burned off, probably seared down to the bone - but would it be instantly fatal the way we saw? I mean, no vital organs were actually damaged. Unless his brain boiled. :). I'm picturing more of a lingering, screaming, slowly succumbing to madness and pain kinda death.

I really didn't like that guy. :)

Yeah, the melting point of gold is 1064°C. Bone doesn't melt at any temperature, it will only burn--at around 800-900°C. I imagine the gold would've disintegrated his scalp almost immediately, but would not have gone through the bone as quickly as he died. Hmm, where to find a volunteer to test this?

You could just as easily say the shock of the whole thing gave him a severe heart attack, which did him in.

Unless there's a vacuum between his skull and his brain (not that implausible considering his behavior) it's a safe guess a good amount of that heat was absorbed by his brain which is pretty important to living.

I thought the episode was great and didn't mind most of the changes. Although Tyrion's confession's didn't work for me since they felt like lines from a contemporary show that was slightly changed to fit this one. I was disappointed that the dire wolf scene was cut but I can understand why... but at this point you have to wonder why they even exist in the story given how little they have to do.

Episode 7 was also great. the only thing that sucks is that it'll be another week before episode 8 comes out.

I still don't see the heat transferring quickly enough to kill in a handful of seconds.

I agree that we need a Mythbusters episode for this.

Poor Viserys. He should have waited just a little longer and he would have gotten his invasion. At least he got his crown

I also found the quick melting Gold thing a bit unbelievable, but it's hard to come up with an alternative way without sacrificing the whole scene. Maybe if the kettle had been glowing red already (not saying that would be realistic, but better than having soup inside it), or if they had moved that scene to a nearby place where some Dothraki are already busy melting metal.

Anyway, great episode. I'm not a big Fantasy guy and once the Hobbit comes around it will be hard for me to re-adapt to that kind of Fantasy world again.

Somehow I now start calling the characters by their real names- even "little Malfoy" and "Boromir". Never thought this would happen so soon

Regarding Tyrion's story of jacking off into some turtle stew that Cersei later ate: so Cersei has had both of her brothers' sperm in her in one way or another! Eww!

Imagine if Viserys was also immune to fire like Daenerys is now and survived the molten crown. He's walk around the rest of the series with the melted "crown" on his head, looking like a comic book supervillain.

Just watched the first six episodes over the past few days... And I just have to say I'm hooked. The premise didn't sound very interesting to me, but this show is excellent. The writing is great, but the costumes, sets, and production quality is also top notch... Just a reminder that almost anything on HBO or Showtime is good.

In fact, I want HBO or Showtime to do a new sci-fi series now more than ever. :D

I think having metal poured on your head that's several hundred degrees hot would boil your brain in a matter of moments. The brain is a delicate matter and even a bit of blood leakage into it can cause severe trauma up to death.

I believe molten gold is a bit worse than a "mere" aneurysm.

However from the pure physics point either the pot wasn't hot enough for the time it took or they should have taken longer but as has been pointed out already it would have dragged out the scene if they would have observed pure physics.. Drogo waited for a few moments for it to melt thus increasing the tension of the scene and it was done well. No need to nitpick it to death (but being here that's normal ).

Oh yeah, it's not so much a nitpick as real curiosity. I'm curious exactly what would really happen, how long it would take to kill, what exactly the mechanism of fatality is... y'know, morbid stuff like that. :)

I got interested by the gold melting business so looked up some videos and articles on gold melting (they're plentiful on Youtube). Apparently, gold will actually melt to a fully liquid extremely fluid state within 1:00 minute. I guess it's pretty soft after all.

The real thing with the "golden crown" scene isn't how long it took the gold to get gooey, but the temperature required of the pot in order to do it. I think for the sake of making the scene work, that's likely where they fudged it. Still, gold melts relatively easily and quickly, so it's not that unrealistic of a scene.
