So not an ending, then. The dragons and white walkers are part of the TV show, and allegedly meant to be the main threat. They will be resolved within the TV show.
Yeah, 3 years later and i'm still waiting.

You can't say the wait has not been entertaining though.
Quite right. In fact at this stage I couldn't care less about either since they have very little development going on with either. Lots more interesting stuff going on with characters.

I have read quotes by GRRM as envisaging the ending as a wasteland though.

I highly doubt we'll get the kind of resolution we'll expect because this show never does that.

Happy ending? What book/show series have you been watching again? I'm expecting an apocalypse.

Given that the book series is (was?) going to conclude with an instalment called A Dream Of Spring, and that it would make sense for this series to end in a way that hinted towards the end of a medieval age and the beginning of an age of reason and enlightenment, I wouldn't rule out an upbeat ending. I think GRRM has one or two characters he'd like to see do well, too.

What?

Where are you getting the move towards "an age of reason and enlightment" from that title, let alone the story progression? If anything, there'll be a new age of awakening magic and religious fervor now that both dragons and magic are coming to the forefront; something most people had assumed was nonsense up until recently.

^ The dynamics of ASoIAF are based loosely on those of actual medieval history, so it would make sense if at the end of it there was a hint of a more robust society and a civilising process. The White Walkers would be much less of a problem if the Seven Kingdoms learnt to cooperate, respect the rights and value of their people, and generally get their act together. They will probably end up getting hammered over the head with this.

If GRRM says "bittersweet ending" then I take that to mean "most people will be dead, and the survivors will wish they were."

Considering the bulk of the story so far has been people ignoring the threat in the north, fighting amongst each other, betraying each other, and generally making terrible decisions, I've mused the end of the story is the White Walkers descending down through Westeros unopposed and the people of Essos wondering what the big smoking cloud is across the bay.

LOL. This is pretty good:

George R.R. Martin Has 2 Words for People Scared He'll Die Before Finishing "Game Of Thrones" Series

Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin is 65 years old. Because of this, some of his fans are deeply worried that he won't finish writing his A Song of Ice And Fire fantasy book series (which began in 1996, and is the basis for the hit HBO show) before he dies. (See: the case of fellow fantasy author Robert Jordan.)

Well, he was asked about this during a recent interview with Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger. Here's his response:

Well, I find that question, you know, pretty offensive, frankly, when people start speculating about my death and my health. So, 'fuck you' to those people. [Laughs.]

This isn't the first time Martin has addressed this concern among his readers. In 2012, he wrote a blog post trolling his fans who are so obsessed with the series that they routinely berate him for working on other projects. It reads:

Reading. I just finished THE KING'S BLOOD, the second volume of Daniel Abraham's "Dagger and Coin" series. Books like this remind me why I love epic fantasy. Yes, I'm prejudiced, Daniel is a friend and sometime collaborator... but damn, that was a good book. Great world, great characters, thoroughly engrossing story. The only problem was, it ended too soon. I want more. I want to know what happens to Cithrin, and Marcus, and Geder, and Clara. And I want to know NOW. God damn you, Daniel Abraham. I know for a fact that you are writing more Expanse books with Ty, and more urban fantasies as M.L.N. Hanover, and doing short stories for some hack anthologist, and scripting some goddamn COMIC BOOK, and even sleeping with your wife and playing with your daughter. STOP ALL THAT AT ONCE, and get to writing on the next Dagger and Coin. I refuse to wait.

I can understand how this would be embrassing to be called out on your health in such a public way. But it wasn't his fans that told him to eat too much and not exercise.
