Re: Game of Thrones 2.8 - "The Prince of Winterfell" - Rate and discus

I went with excellent this time as I think almost every scene was a winner. Robb's romance hasn't been as good as I was hoping, but it's been improving as it's gone on. There were a lot of beautiful shots in this episode: the King's Landing exteriors filmed in Croatia, more gorgeous Icelandic vistas, and some great magic hour shots in the woods.

Poor Ros should never have gone to King's Landing. She's had a rough time of it there.

Arya using her final kill to blackmail Jaqen into paving the way for an escape was great. Loved her little shrug as Jaqen objected to her lack of honor. A girl does what she must to survive.

Can't wait for "Blackwater"!

How are they going to know you read the books if you don't give it away lol... makes me want to go post there.

Re: Game of Thrones 2.8 - "The Prince of Winterfell" - Rate and discus

Want to ask, but, probably best for the answer to be in spoiler code: What's the deal with the horn? Why is everyone in here excited?

Re: Game of Thrones 2.8 - "The Prince of Winterfell" - Rate and discus

The Horn of Winter was supposedly used in ancient times by a King-Beyond-the-Wall named Joramun to awaken giants.

Its direct importance to this story is that Mance Rayder, the current KBTW, believes it can be used to bring down the Wall. As he is uniting the Free Folk to march on the Wall away from the Others, he is searching for the Horn.

I gave it an average mainly because Robb's romance doesn't work for me and I'm still puzzled at the change in character name and location from the book. Also, is it just me or do the actors playing Robb and Talisa have little chemistry? It's just all seems so forced when they are together. Ygritte and Jon have chemistry, hell, Sam and Gilly had some chemistry in their three scenes together but Robb and Talisa? Yikes. Maybe that's intentional, I don't know. Have to see how that gets fleshed out.

I would have loved more time with Stannis and Davos (despite either not being my favorite chracters, book or TV) and I think they needed to show why Cat let Jaime go and her instructing Brienne to go with him. I'm pretty sure that is in the book but I think as a TV viewer, I'm puzzled. I really, really hope that gets explained by season's end because as is, it doesn't make any sense and I hope they aren't relying on just book readers to know the answer.

Tryion, Bronn, and Varys are so gold. I think an entire episode of those three in a room would be awesome.

She is just meh. Overall the casting for GoT has been phenom. I think the actress suffers from a case of being surrounded by better actors. I think the actor playing Rob is trying to sell it, but it just falls flat.

Stephen Dillane's portrayal of Stannis has grown on me... I think he's done a good job on a character that's something of a cipher even in the books. He's hard to visualize from just reading.
Interesting. Stannis was one of my favourite mid-level characters in the books, and I liked the sense of tragedy hanging about him from very early on (Maester Cressen's prologue, which states that Stannis has always been the awkward, unloved Baratheon brother). I had a very vivid impression of him and for season two there wasn't a new role I felt the show hinged more on.

I've been very satisfied with how Dillane and the writers have handled Stannis since (like him correcting people's grammar - I don't think he ever did that in the books, but it just seems like a very Stannis thing to do).

Now Davos often feeled as the most cipher-y POV character so far, but Cunningham's really been hitting his performance out of the park, in that we get the sense of Davos being honourable, humble, and a practical man of low birth.

This said, I agree I would have liked to see more of Stannis and Davos - beyond liking the characters in the books, the mixture of respect and tension between Dillane and Cunningham is fun - but I appreciate the show is juggling a lot of stories with a minimal amount of time.

There's already a Jeyne, Jeyne Poole. You can't have two Jeynes.

Also sets are expensive.

It seems these days you can't have any Jeynes...

Yes, but she doesn't come into play until much, much later. I don't think too many people could confuse Robb's Jeyne with Ramsay's Jeyne.

You can tell he is trying really, really hard to like this chick.

I think she was mentioned and possibly briefly seen in the first season.

I don't think they showed her in the show (or perhaps shown but didn't attach a name), but she was in the book

Re: Game of Thrones 2.8 - "The Prince of Winterfell" - Rate and discus

Jeyne Poole has indeed been seen in the show (no spoilers on that page, but don't follow it back to the full wiki entry if you haven't read the books). I believe she only appeared during the needlework scene in "Winter is Coming," along with another girl who was presumably Beth Cassel.
