In the books, it's only barely implied that he gives the babies to the Others (or White Walkers, for TV viewers) at all. The scene at the end that Jon saw was more definitive in that regard than anything that Martin has actually written.

Knowing GRRM, the fate of those kids will either be crucial to the plot or utterly inconsequential... :D

It is stated pretty clearly, as I recall, that Craster and some of the Wildlings make sacrifices to the Others "The Cold Gods, The White Shadows." to keep them at bay. Craster's women believe that is what he does with his sons(and sheep, occasionally), and Gilly(I think?) refers to the Others as "Craster's sons." suggesting she has been raised to think the boys are given to the Others to raise as their own.

I finally saw this... I really liked it, although my gut reaction is that it was not as cohesive and epic as the last episode. I missed the comet, or similar transitions. They splurged a lot of budget on making the 1st episode visually impressive, less so on this one.

But then again I am traveling this weekend, and had to watch it on a very low-res HBOGO stream. I need to rewatch it in HD at home before I grade it.

Favorite parts:
+ Any scene with Davis/Stannis. I like the casting of the pirate. Hot Melisandre. :)
+ Theon's scenes with his father and sister. I'm so glad they kept her introduction close to the books. ;)
+ Ghost!
+ Pyke!
+ I liked the Ros/Littlefinger scene. It dispells the "happy hooker" trope quite well. And Littlefinger goes from nice to cooooold real fast.

Least favorite:
- The scene with the captains daughter. Uncomfortable, very much so. But in this case it was uncomfortable on purpose, just as in the book. So it is both a positive and negative.

I did manage to watch this last night and wanted to ask, for others here that have also seen it, was the sound a little "off" for you as well? Like dialogue moving at a fast pace and everyone's voices sounding ever so slightly higher pitched. I was looking through the comment thread on the leak on winteriscoming and people were reporting that it was sped up.
It was. Standard european PAL speedup. American NTSC format uses 24 frames per second. The european PAL format uses 25.
So, in order to make the material compatible, they often insert a dummy frame for each second, "squeezing" visuals and audio of the original 24 frames in the process.
This speeds up everything by about 4%.

^ I was able to get the aired version last night and the other thing that was borked on the leaked version was the missing subtitles for the Dothraki speech, so now I know what the heck Dany and Irri were talking about. Hooray! :)

I gave the ep an average.

I enjoyed the scenes with Arya and Gendry. I thought that the reveal that he knew she was a girl was pretty priceless.

Theon's scenes just give me the creeps. He seems very snake in the grass and groping his sister did not endear him.

Stannis leaves me cold. I don't hate him, but I don't like him either.

I wanted Tyrion to smack Cersei into another dimension. She is such a hateful and stupid bitch.

Not bad - Theon as slimy as in the book, and a lot of changes from the book, Tyrion brilliant as always - but Littlefinger seemed out of character and played too overtly as villainous

Voted average (which means fantastic compared to everything else on TV, obviously)

I like how this season the critics like the series better, but the fans are hammering the heck out of it. Love the switch up.

For me I really liked the episode, not excellent, but definitely above average. The little interactions between Tyrion and Cersei/Varys being my favorite.

Another Above Average episode. I'm not a huge fan of Theon or the Iron Islands storylines in the books, and I'm not a fan of either in the show thus far, either.

Agreed. I thought it was average for the show but still ten times better than pretty much everything else on TV.

I'm starting to respect the actor who plays Theon a bit more this season but I think that's because there is more of Theon starting in book 2. While Theon isn't one of my favs, his storyline tends to be one of the more engaging ones as the series goes on.

I like that they are trying to provide more depth to LF in the series since he is a peripheral character in the books but they need to be careful. No more scenes in his brothels and he needs to be a bit more under the radar like Varys is. It's almost like he's a wannabe Maifa boss.

I loved The Guardian's Sarah Hughes' take on the brothel scenes in her review of last week's episode: "I personally feel that this show is extremely instructive should you ever wish to know the best way to fake an orgasm in a whorehouse."

I'm not feeling this season so far. Slow pacing, too much focus on old uninteresting characters, and the newer characters aren't really grabbing me.

If Stannis leaves you cold, isn't that sort of appropriate? He's not exactly a cuddly guy...

Exactly. Stannis is supposed to be dull. That's who he is. A boring joykill who is very strict and by the book but also very fair.

If ratings don't drop off a cliff, we will. HBO may be more cautious due to recent issues with other series. (Luck)

I also read that the show creators had three season contracts, so it is possible that once those issues are ironed out, they could announce season 4 before season 2 has finished airing.

I don't know if I'm imagining it, but has Aiden Gillen (Littlefinger) been ill? Something about his voice seems off compared to last season. It's deeper and not as strong. To me it was most notable in the episode 1 scene of Cersei's confrontation with him in the courtyard. And it didn't seem like his mouth quite moved right as well, so either the dubbing was off or he had something like Jamey Sheridan had during his time on Law and Order CI, Bell's palsey, I think.

I do hope he's okay, and I'm making something out of nothing.
