Good form to not blantantly toss stuff out, but the people that have read the books are ALSO watching the series, and have a right to comment on it as well. If they mistakenly use the wrong tense when talking about someone, or laugh a little when a newbie to the series speculates about how Ned's reign as king is going to go (or whatever), who's really at fault?

The person who gave out the spoiler. They are at fault.

There are plenty of posters that read the Doctor Who spoilers, but I can still participate in an episode discussion without worrying about learing what's going to happen in the next episode. I can't do the same in these threads.

If you're THAT anxious to avoid any possible hint of a spoiler, probably best to avoid any threads at all that pertain to it until you're caught up, accidents happen. Why is it on everyone ELSE to protect YOUR enjoyment of something? Best effort and all, but ultimately taking a risk if you jump into something late and insist on discussing it online.

In this post you've made the argument that people who've read the books should be able to participate in the discussion threads (and I agree with that), and that they should be forgiven for the regular spoiler dumps we've seen (which I disagree with), and now you're saying that people that haven't read the books shouldn't be able to participate in the discussion threads of a TV show they're watching. Really?

How about we do something simple? Why don't book readers who want to throw out spoilers participate in the thread that was created specifically for them?

Jeez. I didn't intend to spark such a debate.

But I will say my intent in this thread was to comment on a remark that Kegg, something that would make no sense to do in the other thread. And I was quite careful to avoid placing anything that could be construed as a spoiler inside the tags, which is in keeping with board policy on spoilers. I mean, I generally agree that these threads should not become filled with spoiler tags, but I also think these occasional side-conversations can have their place as well, so long as they don't dominate discussion. I liken it to when people are doing a watch-through thread for a show they haven't seen yet, where there are often spoiler-tagged comments sprinkled throughout.

Speaking of which I spoiled Dune for anyone who hadn't read it.

I guess I should apologize, but I'll also admit the idea people on this forum hadn't read Dune simply didn't occur to me.

As my random apology suffix, enjoy the best cover version of the Game of Thrones theme I've found on youtube:

[Edit: I removed the video because it's just someone copying some other guy's video. Look at Yoda's post below for original.]

^Wtf is wrong with people on YouTube? Seriously. All that is is this:

Probably took the free MP3 download link... and then uploaded it back with a static image of Sean Bean.

How fucking pointless is that?

Cool cover though.

If anyone here hasn't read Dune yet, they need to return their Nerd Card asap. :p

Back on topic, I was floored by what happened at the end of this episode. The show in general has grown on me greatly. At first I was on the fence, then somewhere along the lines I started to really like it. This episode sealed the deal.

I'm curious to see where they go from here and who becomes the leading character. I sort of get the feeling that Stark's youngest daughter will grow up to be an important character in the story. I suppose I'll have to read the books to see if I am correct

Well, let's just say the Lannisters are going to find themselves in a world of hurt next season when they go up against Ned's eccentric billionaire brother, the yet unseen Tony Stark.

What movie is that footage from?

Ummm, I haven't read Dune.... yet. I started it a few months ago, but at the time I was reading like 7 or 8 books, and it was one of the ones I set aside when I realized that was to many. I am definitely going to read it though, so can I at least have a Nerd Learners Permit?

I hadn't seen the original video of the cover, Yoda. I'll pull mine, then, I guess the guy just wanted hits (for whatever asinine reason that entails).

The Hitler scene is from Downfall, which is, incidentally, brilliant.

And just wait until we find out about the brother of Ned who has been imprisoned deep in the dungeons of King's Landing, having gone half-mad with his obsession over which side is his... the Stark in the Iron Mask.

You know, the only reason I read the fucking books is because I watched like two episodes of the show and thought I got lost. I'm sitting there wondering... wait... that guy is Tyrion's brother... and that chick is Tyrion's sister right? He said so? The queen? So why is he fucking his sister. Meh, that can't be right. Guess I have to read the books.

Well, that and the fact that there were already like 2,000 other characters who I couldn't tell apart.

As for Dune, I only listened to it on audiobook last year. It was totally badass. I saw the movie on HBO or something when I was like 8 and didn't remember a single thing about it.

I can't wait to see The Mountain and Syrio vs. Iron Man fight. It will have to take up at least 3 full episodes to do it justice.

I like the skipping of the battles, personally... after LotR et al., do we really need to see yet another massive scene of hacking and slashing? I'd rather have them spend their production dollars elsewhere. One of the things I like about this series are the fight scenes due to their personal and nasty nature. They strike me as some of the "least-movie-like" fights I've seen in a while, and pretty realistic.

Speaking of fight scenes...
I was surprised that that Dothraki really thought, trying to slice open a solid steel breastplate would actually work.
That was an incredibly stupid move.

I thought Jorah had been teaching these guys about this stuff?

If the other Dothraki warriors are similarily "skilled", the Westerosi will wipe the floor with them.
If Drogo survives, that is. If he doesn't they won't cross the Narrow sea anyway.

^ The Dothraki are mounted warriors, more than anything else. In single combat against a knight from the Seven Kingdoms, then yeah, you're usually going to see them lose. But in a full out battle or war, it's the speed and numbers of the Dothraki that would give them a big advantage.

Remember what Robert said, the Dothraki are trained to work together as one army whereas the opposing forced wouldn't. Also, all of them are true warriors whereas armored knights would make up the minority of the Westeros armies, the rest would be untrained farmers and such.

While it was awesome befor, now this episode revealed the deception of the HBO studio in to tricking its viewers in believeing something that wasnt there from the beginning, as seen on the poster below.
In fairness to HBO here, you can clearly see that Ned Stark is wearing his 'Hand of the King' badge in that photo. As the Hand of the King you can sit on the Iron Throne and act as the King, which is something we did see Ned Stark do once...

...but yes, it's great the show set itself up for the same twist reveal that the books had.

Another point to this is the skipping of battles. If you arent going to do it 100% then dont do it at all, because it becomes disappointing.

Ehh.

There are battles I actually want to see, and the two we skipped aren't those.

I mean, if we don't get the fight at the Wall in "A Storm of Swords" I'll probably be pretty disappointed.

Past that? The Blackwater fight in "A Clash of Kings."

But those are the two only pitched battles from the books I'd actually be interested in seeing in the show. I don't think we need to be there for, for example, Oxcross.

The Dothraki would be wiped out in droves by the knights unless they were dumb enough to fight them on an open field. Which of course they probably would in the first battle. The Dothraki would also be limited by the distance they have traveled meaning they would have no support system behind them. They would have to kill everyone behind them or leave more and more of forces behind to watch over the lands they have conquered. You can only bring so many Dothraki over on each ship. Feeding that many horses would be a major problem especially as winter approaches and grazing land becomes scarce. So unless they could conquer the seven kingdoms quickly they would lose.

The Dothraki aren't conquerors, they're raiders. That's why they'd be so dangerous on Westros, because they'd fight in a style completely differently to the normal castle-based warfare. They'd raid the countryside and starve out the fortified armies, rather than necessarily beat Westeros in open combat.

And someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that even during the heart of winter in Westros, there'd still be plenty of grazing land in the southern kingdoms like Dorne and the Reach.

Let's also not forget it's not just 'the Dothraki'.

It's the Targaryens, once the ruling family of all the Seven Kingdoms. The Baratheon claim to the throne stems from the fact they're distantly related to the Targaryens.

Of course, Daenerys and her son have a claim to the Iron Throne. If there were people who weren't wild about the current claimants to the rule of Westeros, they could side with Drogo's Horde.
