I'm very excited that they are going with relative unknowns for these big roles - It makes it easier for most people to see the character instead of the actor. And so far their casting department has been 100% spot on. (well, except for the stable boy Arya killed) :)

While I would have preferred someone with perhaps south Asian features for Melisandre, I think this Dutch actress will be great. She looks beautiful.

I'm getting the impression that, perhaps with the exception of any Summer Islanders that might appear, they're going to avoid any non-European phenotypes to portray other cultures for fear of 'Orientalism' or other such bullshit.

More casting news: Liam Cunningham will play Davos Seaworth (perfect casting I think) and Oliver Ford Davies will play Maester Cressen.

As for Melisandre, Martin describes her as having red hair and very pale skin, the lands of the east having people with a wide range of skin colors, so the casting of Van Houten is spot-on.

Sorry, to revive such an old thread, but I was just wondering if anyone had any idea when this is coming out on DVD/Blu-Rey/VOD/whatever? I'm around 500-600 pages into the book, and I'd love to be able to jump into show as quickly after finishing the book as I can.

No date announced yet, I gather HBO's previous practice is to do so close to the next season... I was hoping for Xmas, but nothing yet. :(

it'll most likelly be a apirl release. HBO is pretty good at releasing the dvd a month prior to the next season. all so for those who are interested dynamite entertainment is doing the comic book adaption to the series.

That's not bullshit.

Martin actually trots out classic Orientalist cliches about the effeminate East versus the masucline west, and that's painfully obvious in Dance With Dragons especially.

This said, I really doubt they'd avoid nonwhite actors for the non-Westeros cultures for the other concern that this is a pretty white TV show.

The guys on Winter Is Coming website are pretty sure that March 20th is the release date.

Sadly, even with this show's critical acclaim and good ratings I doubt any other shows in the near-future will have the guts to kill off a central character before the first season is finished.

Depends on the book they are adapting ;)
