found out we had free HBO this month so today ON HBO DEMAND I watched all ten episodes. all I gota say fucking awesome show. now that I've seen this show and can't wait till season 2 starts. I was wondering how close is season one to the books? because this weekend I bought all five books and plan to start them today.
all I was wondering about the book the hedge knight if it's relivent.
Is this one of their free preview things, or did you do something to get it?

it's one there preview things. I noticed I had HBO and then checked on demand and it had all ten episodes so sat down and watched all ten.

The 2nd book is predicted to take 2 seasons, and having just finished it I'd bet that would be so.

okay I am asking for one spoiler only. how far apart does the first book and second take?

^
Not really a spoiler to answer to that I think but I'll code anyway:

Second book picks up pretty much where the first book left off. I think some time's passed... but not a lot.

The 2nd book is predicted to take 2 seasons, and having just finished it I'd bet that would be so.
Where'd you hear that?

Because I'd heard that George R. R. Martin is writing an episode for next season titled "Blackwater", which suggests (to those that have read that book, obviously) that season two will comprise book two.

I had heard GRRM suggest that book three would be best split into two seasons, though.

Ah, must have been that one. I heard it in one of these threads, so I must be mis-remembering it.

thanks kegg. how many season's will this show last and is george r r martin writing the entire series. and how many more actors from the lord of the Rings will be in this?

I dont think we have answers to those questions. We're as much in the dark as you are.

Well, there is one question that can be answered:

is george r r martin writing the entire series
IIRC, he's only written one episode of the series. Though if your referring to the books, its all of them.

The only thing that's confirmed is it'll have a second season.

But, assuming the series isn't cancelled and assuming it adapts all seven novels (two of which haven't been written yet), you'd be looking at a minimum of seven seasons. Which is kind of long by HBO drama standards, the HBO dramas that don't get cancelled tend to go for the five/six season range.

As indicated, though, a case can be made for splitting the third book into two seasons, so it could be somewhere upwards from eight seasons...

Though I can't really wrap my head around HBO having such a long running drama series. But then again, who knows?

and is george r r martin writing the entire series.

Nope. He writes one episode a season - this season it was episode eight, "The Pointy End" - and that's it. David Beinoff and D.B. Weiss are the actual showrunners for the TV program and are doing the hard work there (and a good job, truthfully).

how many more actors from the lord of the Rings will be in this?

No idea. There's no plans to cast any LOTR alumni for season two that's been announced, and obviously, Sean Bean will not be reprising his role as Ned Stark.

Of course, not all major roles for season two have been cast yet anyway. So who knows.

It seems pretty likely we'll have a pretty consistent use of Northern Irish talent, though, which is nice.

Here's what GRRM said to CNN about his role in the TV series:

I was deeply involved in the adaptation from the beginning. I'm a co-executive producer on the show. I write one episode per season. I did Episode 8 of this first season. I just finished doing my script for the second season, which will be Episode 9. And I have had a voice in all of the casting and so forth. Where changes were made, I know the reasons why.

Not sure what happened to the other threads, but here's more Season 2 alludements, about cast coming over from Camelot.
I chose to believe this means Eva Green is Melisandre.

I hope not. Not that she is bad by any means, but surely there is a bigger pool of actors available than ones that just had similar roles. I also want someone more exotic as Melisandre. She is from Asshai (the equivalent of the far east), not Westeros.

Usually a problem with a long running series is paying the same actors larger sums of money as time goes on. This series surely wont have much of that problem. So I can easily see it going to seven or eight seasons.

I really did enjoy them having the guts to kill off the guy they'd advertised as the central lead, and not even in the season finale!

Imagine if Breaking Bad had the guts to kill off Walter White and continue on from there.

The difference here is that Walter IS that show, it is his story. Game of Thrones was never about Ned, he just happened to have a major role for a while.
