News Game Of Thrones’ Martin Wanted To Write For Trek

Was thinking that too. Granted, GRRM wasn't as thoroughly well known back then that he is now, but goodness! "It's not a science fiction show, it's a PEOPLE show"?? Who WAS this cup-drooling fuckwit, indeed?!?

I don't think that's completely wrong, the sci fi parts were often window dressing for the personal stories affecting the characters, so wether it's a sci fi show first or a people show first is a matter of perspective.
Star Trek at its core being about people is also not something I'm hearing for the first time, that shouldn't be a controversial opinion.

And this line from Martin:
“I was fooled by the photon torpedoes and starships,” said Martin.

If that was his attitude during the interview I'm not suprised he didn't get the job because that's such a superficial statement.

Well, since the "people" on TNG were hugely arrogant asses for at least the first two seasons (and I say that as someone who considers TNG to be pretty much the best Trek show), if his interview was for working on one of those two seasons I really just have to laugh at the producer.

Even after that point though its still a sci fi show. Its not like calling something "Sci Fi" means its automatically not about people. Just being a sci fi story doesn't mean its all about the tech or science over anything else. To pretend that Trek isn't sci fi is both pretentious and hilariously asinine.

I suspect Martin may be paraphrasing and oversimplifying how the original conversation actually went all those foggy years ago, with exaggeration caused by personal bias based on his own personal feelings on the matter.

George is a good friend of Melinda Snodgrass, who was a writer ("Measure of a Man") and later story editor on TNG during the 2nd & 3rd seasons. She may have encouraged George to come in and apply for a writing position when he ran up against this unnamed producer. Too bad. George might have contributed some interesting stories to the series...

Science fiction is about people. I'm sick of TV people assuming what they do is superior to mere science fiction. There was a promo for Voyager, where it was claimed that their next episode "raised science fiction to the level of an art form". Thank you Voyager, so much, for saving us from the likes of Bradbury, Asimov, Clarke... insert your favorites here.
