Game involving large spaceships?

ReadyAndWilling

Fleet Captain
ok, so i was watching star wars: ROTS and i loved the scene in the beginning where the separatists and the republic engage each other in that huge battle between the cruisers.

i'd love to play something where i'm the captain of a ship like that, or even an armada.

i've played bridge commander and armada 2, but i'm looking for something more modern?

anyone know what's out there?

thanks

Star Trek Online has great space battles and beautiful space graphics (ground isn't bad either).
It is pay to play though and if you like to check it out I send you a buddy key, if you like.

I remember X-Wing vs Tie Fighter for Star Wars was awesome. IIRC, you could get a MOD for Klingon Academy and play as a Destroyer which was good fun. :)

Modern might be tough. Klingon Academy was the best I thought because of the menu system of selecting sub-commands for different ship functions so you were pressing a succession of keys on your keyboard which gave you the feeling of using a console on the ship: 1-3-5-7 to fire photons, etc.

Sadly one of the problems with computer games is that backwards-compatibility doesn't last more than a generation or two, but with the rise in download provision of games some publishers are going to their back-catalogues and revamping old games to run on newer systems: I have the original Call of Duty/United Offensive and Jedi Knight II/Academy running on my last gen Mac Mini as a result.

Maybe Interplay will resurrect some of their old Trek titles?

Nexus: The Jupiter Incident
Star Wars: Empire at War
Sins of a Solar Empire
Sword of the Stars
Homeworld 2

X3: The Terran Conflict is pretty good, though it has a pretty big learning curve and you have to be pretty patient because it starts off slow. It also has some fairly frustrating bugs/ issues (the only available freighter captains are all mentally handicapped, and if you buy additional ships to provide yourself with backup, don't expect them to last more than a battle or two), but if you can hang in through that, it's a fairly entertaining game.
