This realy allows me to understand how huge the galaxy is. The Gama Quadrant is way out there.Well here is my first attempt at a Star Trek Star Chart.

Not sure what that means. Can you explain please?I think it would make more sense to use a polar coordinate system rather than a Cartesian one.
That makes a lot of sense actually. The space between the spiral arms are supposed to be devoid of stars, and by extension life right? And the various empires of the galaxy would probably be more restricted to the spiral arms, rather than evenly spread out.

Even though there's no point in securing empty space, even with warp drive, because... well, it's called space for a reason.
An enemy could use that empty space to launch an attack because they'd be free to roam it. If however the empty space was claimed it could be enclosed and bordered off so no other species could traverse it. If they're going to border the empty space off at each end then they might as well say it's there's.

I think the territories are too big. If the Klingons were able to reach Cardassian border in time at the start of DS9's Season Six, it wouldn't take more than a couple of weeks to across the galaxy when judging from the sizes shown.
But it's not necessarily a straight line distance. 8000 square lightyears is different then 8000 lightyears at it's widest point. And since this is space, it's more likely 8000 cubic lightyears isn't it?
