Galaxy Quest Nod?

Yeoman Randi

Vice Admiral
Admiral
I've looked and havent seen this mentioned anywhere...but please forgive me if i am repeating this question.

Did anyone else see the whirling blades in the engine room tubes (that Scotty was heading for) as a direct nod to the whirling/chopping blades in Galaxy Quest? I felt it was a direct homage to that movie, rather than to a Star Trek scene. One of those silly "theres no reason for this to be here other than to create tension" things....

Just wondering if Galaxy Quest popped into anyone else's mind at that moment.

I was curious why there would be giant blender blades in there, to chop up the water maybe? I didn't make the connection to galaxy quest though.

Oh, yeah... The Galaxy Quest nod was brought up on sneak-preview night here, I think. At the least, it was on opening night. "This stupid spinning fan they have in every episode!"

Kaziarl, the piece of equipment is a water turbine. Spock and Chekov call it that when they note on the bridge that someone has employed, unauthorized, a seldom-used console in that room.

"Turbine Room 3", if I recall correctly, and the water turbine seen in the movie does resemble some kinds of rotary water pumps (though relatively few of these have the handy see-through housing.)

When I was waiting for my wife and daughters outside the restroom after seeing the movie, I overheard two guys talking over the movie, and one of them thought the blades were an homage to Galaxy Quest. I didn't give it much thought at the time.

Never crossed my mind. I just figured they directed liquid flow and kept pressure up to where it needs to be. Like a hydrolic pump booster or something.

The scene was a combination of what happened when Augustus Gloop fell in the chocolate pool and when Grandpa Joe and Charlie drank the Fizzy-Lifting Drinks in the Bubble Room. If anything it is a Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory homage.

For the most part I kind the movie would have been quite good had it been like a Galaxy Quest or Spaceballs type parody...

Just sucked as a Star Trek movie
