Turn the pomposity and seriousness up to 11. Make the Patrick Stewart character into something akin to "Trevor Slattery" in Shang-Chi. Riff on "Gene's Vision" with a pseudo religious fervour. Have a rivalry with the casts of some spinoffs or a pastiche of Star Wars. Just spitballing

You're equating Tarkin (in Rogue One, I assume) with Jar-Jar just because of the CGI thing?

Not only did Tarkin definitely have an important role to play in R1 (arguably much more important than Jar-Jar ever was), but even if the CGI didn't exactly look 100% accurate...that can be excused, because Tarkin always looked kind of weird anyway. Hell, I probably wouldn't have even noticed it was CGI if I didn't already know. So the "uncanny valley" really doesn't mean anything with Tarkin.

Leia, on the other hand...you'd have a point there. Far as I'm concerned, they should have just shot Leia from behind and never even shown her face, just the iconic hairdo. Especially since Leia only has one word of dialogue!

You compared Tarkin to Jar-Jar. Therefore you must have meant that Tarkin was just as useless as Jar-Jar. This is clearly not the case.

Tarkin (and his ongoing feud with Krennic) was central to the plot of R1. So clearly he had use, he had a reason to be there.

Not just Star Trek parody, but vintage sci-fi in general, particularly Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (which aired about the same time as the in-universe GQ series and whose second season was uncannily similar to GQ -- a hero played by a spotlight-hogging lead actor, his alien sidekick who was the last survivor of a dead warrior race, a marginalized and objectified female lead with a vaguely defined shipboard role), but also Irwin Allen shows and arguably Space: 1999. But most people today only recognize the Trek bits because the rest is more obscure.

Like I said, Rogue One depended heavily on Tarkin and his feud with Krennic. And all things considered, they did a remarkable job of bringing him back (with the full blessing of Peter Cushing's estate, I might add).

Digitally re-creating Leia was, I agree, unnecessary. Not so with Tarkin.

As for the so-called uncanny valley: As I also said, Tarkin always looked a bit "off" to begin with, even when Cushing was playing him. So any imperfections in the digital likeness can be dismissed simply because of that.

Well, I suppose they could have gone that route, given that he already DID play Tarkin (in ROTS). But it's rather telling that he didn't have any dialogue, and only appeared for a few seconds, isn't it?

No, it's not. Given that I hold very little of the ROTS production decision as making a whole lot of sense at times.

Also, given that Mr. Pygram's talent as a villain is fully on display as Scorpious in Farscape I think he would work very well as Tarkin if given the chance.

Since they brought back Genevieve O'Reilly from ROTS to play Mon Mothma in R1, and also Jimmy Smits as Bail Organa (although we never saw the character in the OT), I think it would have made sense to also have Wayne Pygram play Tarkin, assuming he would have been available for the part.

Yeah, there are so many eras they could parody. Trek has such a wide and varied history. There's no reason why they can't just go in with a whole new cast to present a new era full of new things to make fun of. So much Trek related stuff has happened since Galaxy Quest was released. They could even have Tim Allen return as a veteran actor who reluctantly agrees to return to play the part of an Admiral, and who after reading the fine print on his contract, notices he's to be killed off.

As much as I defend the CGI Tarkin (he looks mostly good because his face was already craggy), I would've loved if Pygram returned. He didn't even get a chance in Episode III and I love his performance as Scorpius.

Yeah, that would've been nice. Sure, we have the technology to recreate faces now, but acting is still acting, and it can be good to see different actors get the chance to interpret the same character. The performance, not the appearance, is what should matter.

In the past ten years or what not, it does seems there's a lot more TNG around than TOS, that may well be the one modern audiences are more familiar with.
