Galaxy Class Starships 20 years later, What changes Occur ?

Re: Galaxy Class Starships 20 years later, What changes Occu

The Galaxy doesn't need much tinkering. Some better sensors and computer cores, newer phaser arrays and shield generators, quantorp launchers, some tinkering with the Warp engines to make them 'greener', and refitting of the main areas such as the bridge for style reasons (to lose the 'hotel lobby' look) - nothing to it at all really.

Hmm. Well, regarding crew complement, I do recall in "Yesterday's Enterprise," that Yar said the Galaxy-class was capable of carrying thousands of troops, so I can see a comparable increase in the Starfleet universe we know if families and civilians were no longer on board. Maybe they'd become even more multi-purpose, serving as troop carriers in some circumstances. Or maybe multi-generational ships for very long-range exploration/colonization to allow crew members to marry and have children.

Red Ranger

True enough, she does have an onboard antimatter generator.

Huh?

Add some warp capability to the saucer section.

Definitely agree. I think the three parts of the separable USS Prometheus -- the ship with the multi-vector assault mode -- all had warp capability. So it makes sense that capability would be incorporated into the saucer section in refit Galaxy-class starships. Maybe retractable warp nacelles. -- RR

Re: Galaxy Class Starships 20 years later. What changes Occu

I always wondered why they left the yard without warp for the saucer... maybe with the Cardassian stuff going on and a fear of further escalation it was decided to put several units out there as a show of force without fully installing everything and going through extended testing.

I gather that from the several lines of dialog about possible design flaws with the ship.

It could be that some of the hypothetical empty space in the saucer could be used to mount a small low-power warp-core, additional dedicated antimatter pods and an expanded deuterium tank (same one the impulse engines feed off of.) Instead of a retractable nacelle system I'd do the KISS approach of embedded coils near the outer rim of the saucer or possibly in a raised "hump" in line with the impulse engine.

Even better. You draw plasma from the impulse drives and inject it into a secondary reaction chamber where it interacts with incoming antimatter and crystal and the resulting product is piped to the warp coils in the hump...

I need a good top-down view of the E-D saucer so I can sketch this out...

Re: Galaxy Class Starships 20 years later. What changes Occu

The Kelly class superdreadnoughts featured in the GEC Logbook was essentially the Galaxy class but with two warp engines attached to the saucer section and triple torpedo tubes forward.

And forty six decks instead of forty two thanks to a slightly deeper engineering hull.

I don't think I ever saw it online

The Galactic Engineers Concordance and their Logbook was a Fanzine that ran mainly in the 1990s.

I had a short story and a couple of articles in it.

It finally folded its tent when Roy Firestone had some family issues that took up too much of his time to keep maintaining it.

Mike Okuda was impressed with it and for the last couple of years Firestone sent him free issues.

Re: Galaxy Class Starships 20 years later. What changes Occu

Maybe they could add automated seperation with a multi-vector assualt mode incorporated into it.

Re: Galaxy Class Starships 20 years later. What changes Occu

I'm all about giving the saucer SOME warp capability. Nothing like loading all the civvies into a big UFO and then LEAVING THEM BEHIND with no real means of escaping a warp-capable enemy, who is, frankly, anyone.

Re: Galaxy Class Starships 20 years later, What changes Occu

Well, the TNG Technical Manual said that most of the routine upgrades to the ship over her 100-year projected operational lifespan would be software and computer upgrades. For that reason, I think any noticeable changes in the ship would be light, and probably cosmetic, as a byproduct of the new computer systems... something very much akin to what we saw in the episode "Future Imperfect" (see pics below). BTW, that was and still is my absolute favorite look for the 1701-D.

Re: Galaxy Class Starships 20 years later, What changes Occu

I think post-Dominion war and with the Borg threat diminished, we'd be more likely to see civilians *back* on galaxy class starship, and perhaps even once the fleet is built back up, more Galaxies, or their replacements, used for deep space exploration again. (Some fans don't like the civy thing, but I think it makes sense for long duration deep-range missions to have a ship that is a "city in space". But then, many fans - if you look at the fanfic and fan designs) don't seem to like the whole exploration thing, and like the military aspects of Starfleet better. Too bad, IMHO.)

Likely Trek-Tech upgrades we'd see after the Galaxy's 20th B-day, in addition to the standard sensors and slightly faster, more efficient warp drive upgrades...

* Faster more powerful computers on par with the Sovereign class.

* Bio-neural gel packs.

* Multiphasic & regenerative shielding.

* Ablative armor.

* Borg-enhanced technology throughout the ship.

(Some version of that Borg armor Voyager had may be likely as *tested* out, as well ship components and hull sections that could regenerate. We'd also see Borg enhanced sensors connected to upgraded Astronmetrics and Stellar Cartography labs.)

* Quantum torpedoes. Perhaps a small number of those "Borq-buster" Transphasic (Multiphasic!?) torpedoes we saw at the end of Voyager.

* Micro-warp drive in saucer section. Borrowed from Prometheus class perhaps (which I think likely got ideas from the Defiant class).

* ^And also perhaps

* 2nd generation variable geometry warp field. (The 1701-E is said to have one.)

* Pulse phaser cannon. (Like whatever it was that the Defiant had.)

* Holo-emitters throughout the ship. An EMH mark 4. (Still have dedicated Holodecks, but now even crew cabin could have some holodeck features. (Though, gods forbid when some holographic monster starts running rampant through out he ship...)

* Emergency onboard site-to-site "personal emergency transporters". Not just "escape transporters", but perhaps

* In fact, replicators and transporters (and emitters) interconnected - ask the computer for a drink, it appears on the table next to you, etc...

* Cloaking technology. (Come on people, it's damn well time the Feds had this too - everyone else does. A phased cloak, I don't think *yet*...)

And perhaps, some sort of limited use experimental Slipstream/Transwarp drive.

And I don't see why we couldn't add a few robust Delta Flyer-Runabout ship that could cover a bigger area, detached from the main ship. They would really help in long exploration missions. Unlike Navy ships, as far as we know deep space vessels go out unescorted - silly, I'd rather send out a small fleet of one big ship plus 3-4 smaller escort vessels - a couple of Nova science ships, and Defiant type...one Akira or Steamrunner or New Orleans or Norway type-ship along. Maybe a USS Raven type-ship or "Insurrection" type-Scout ship. Maybe a Galaxy class can do it all itself, but a Intrepid class, I'd expect to see more as part of a small "exploration group" of some sort. But *certainly* a few robust Runabouts/Delta Flyer vessels would help augment an exploration mission of a Galaxy class ship!? But with all these Captian's Yachts, and "Waveriders" and Aeroshuttles and craft like the Argo shuttle - it's about time we started seeing some of these things get more use - or *any* use. And used like Runabouts and Delta Flyer would be the most likely, I think. (Again, I imagine some sort of 2nd generation Runabout/Delta Flyer hybrid. In fact, The Ent-E's shuttle in "Insurrection" was about Runabout sized, wasn't it..?)

Oh...

* And a new beach ball for the Cetacean lab.

ETA: And a mount for a changeble "mission pod" to hold extra sensors/weapons/cargo/etc - - of course that's make sense.)

Re: Galaxy Class Starships 20 years later, What changes Occu

Oh yeah, and...

* Holo-communicators on the bridge and briefing and ready rooms...I mean, since the emitters are already there...

^^^ Voyager's moveable warp nacelles

Yes, but I've read that the 1701-E has these, but it's a more advanced design that doesn't involve the silly moving nacelles.

That is truly hideous. I thought the All Good Things future Enterprise was silly, now it almost looks classy!

Yeah, it's John Eaves'ing the E-D. :mad:

Re: Galaxy Class Starships 20 years later. What changes Occu

The more I think about it, the more I'm inclined to believe that most of the changes in the Galaxy-class will be in performance. I could see such ships able to easily travel at Warp 9.9 (where as Warp 9.8 was originally considered dangerous for the Enterprise-D), with a more powerful computer system and perhaps a few more phaser arrays installed, but that would be basically it.

I do believe that some starship designs do evolve over time, but some don't. I think it depends on whether a design really needs to be completely overhauled or simply tweaked here or there. There's already been a Galaxy-class variant seen in DS9 (with apparently phaser arrays on its nacelles), so it's possible that any major physical changes to the design could be minor.

Corp of Engineers: Well Admirals...the Galaxy Class is now 20 years old...what up grades would you recommend?
Admiral 1: Big ass impulse engines!
Admiral 2: Hrumph!

Ok we need someone to put the AGT cannon on that version above and a third nacelle and those weapon-pods as well. Also the fins. :p

We'll call it the EPIC FANBOY CLASS. Other ships in the class include the USS RAGING BONER, USS WET DREAM, USS ZOMGWTF and the USS ALL YOUR BASES BELONG TO US. :D
