G4 becomes the Esquire Channel

NBC/Universal has decided to rebrand G4 as the Esquire Channel (in a partnership with Esquire Magazine) as a new upscale channel hoping to appeal to the "untapped metrosexual viewership." Cooking, travel, and fashion shows are being developed, as well as perhaps a new one for gaming (for you former G4 watchers).

... Man, there's a lot of shows that are going to need to find new homes. Pretty much all of G4's lineup doesn't fit that demographic.

Man, it's been amazing to watch the gradual decline of G4 over these last 10 years to complete shit. I'm amazed anyone's even trying to salvage anything out of it. Hopefully a video game channel will pop up somewhere though that might actually appeal to gamers. Attack of the Show has been shit for years and X-Play was circling the drain even before Sessler was let go.

Seems like Maxim would have been a better brand to build a channel off of, especially considering what they're starting from.

Oh man I forgot about XPlay and Attack of the Show... I basically stopped watching it a year ago... not because it was bad just because I forgot about it and was never home then... now I have a DVR but I never bothered recording it.

X-Play lost me when they mixed up their format.

Attack of the Show was wearing thing pretty fast, Olivia Munn leaving was pretty much it for me.

Damn, I miss The Screen Savers.

I think this will have a wider reach than G4s demo, who has pretty much "retreated" to websites over the past decade for quicker and more interactive content.

Why wait for TV production when you can get it on YouTube? Honest web-based competition was not something TechTV or G4 had to contend with when they signed on

Yeah, me too. Maybe now they can do Fashion Savers with this new channel

I never liked Attack of the Show very much though. I always found it very immature compared to the programming that came before it. At least in Canada, we still had new episodes of Call for Help and Lab with Leo, which was a spiritual successor after Call for Help went off the air for the last time.

TWIT.tv is the spritual successor to the old TechTV.

Speaking of TWIT, apparently they're going to get Leo and Patrick to do cameo on the last Attack of the Show.

Had never heard of twit.tv. Just checked out the website -- pretty cool. They even have Leo Laporte. :D

Actually, TWiT is owned by Leo. He started the "this week in tech" podcast shortly after he got canned from techtv. It has since grown to a video show, to a network of multiple shows. He doesn't like to refer to the twit network as a podcast network, instead using the term netcast. In many ways, things like twit, revision3, and a few others presents the new model of "tv network" in the Internet age.

I have an essentially free subscription to Esquire. It's basically Maxim trying to pretend it's sophisticated and with less TnA

I actually like Esquire. More tradional styling than GQ, Details, or Men's Journal. It's probably tied with Men's Health for my favorite of the "men's mags".
