G-saviour (Gundam live-action movie)

Anybody ever see this? It's fairly hard to find these days except in rental outlets.

Basically, it was one of the projects done for the twentieth anniversary of the original series, and it's pretty much the quality of a sci-fi channel film-bad CG, sets, acting etc. Basically it starred Brennan Elliot (4400) and frequent anime voice-actress Enuka Okuma(Who beforehand, did the voice of Lady Une on Gundam Wing). Basically it was set in the "Universal Century" Timeline-the one where the original Gundam series and most of the 1980s TV shows were based (Although it was apparentally wiped from that canon by Sunrise due to their embaressment), and pretty much had a plotline similar to QUANTUM OF SOLACE from what I remember (Basically villains hoarding water, or something like that...

I've seen it it's terrible, my advice is to avoid it. The Gundamn.net podcast did a really great review of the movie, take a listen and I pretty much agree with what they have to say. There was even a guest host they have from time to time who defended this crappy movie.

I kinda liked it. It is cheesy, in a Sci Fi Channel Original Movie kind of way; and it suffers from the Curse of Blu Mankuma (good actor, everything he's in basically sucks). But... but... Gundams beamsaber-dueling on the hull of an O'Neill cylinder in live action (CGI)!

Yeah, I know.

I've never seen a Japanese sci-fi movie that was completely satisfying. Some start out good, or have some interesting ideas, but in the end come across like amateur movies. I know some will roast me for this but I think the Japanese see science fiction as juvenile and unsophisticated and the productions reflect this.

Maybe it's just their live action? Their animated stuff certainly does not reflect this attitude.

Yeah, all the diverse entries in the science fiction genre is one reason I got into anime in the first place. You get all kinds of good stuff like Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Gunslinger Girl, Planetes, Infinite Ryvius, Ergo Proxy, Real Drive, Blue Gender, Moonlight Mile, Bubblegum Crisis, or Rideback to name a few. Besides it's easier to do sci-fi with animation anyway, it's more versitile. Maybe that's were all the writing talent over there migrated to.

Personally the only live action, Japanese sci-fi I've seen was the Zeiram movie which was awful. Unless the Death Note and Higurashi no Naku Koroni movies count as Sci-Fi, those were pretty good.
