G.I. Joe Novelization Book Review (SPOILERS)

Barbados Slim

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
io9 has a review of it.

This really sounds like a jumble of bad with light helpings of good on the side. Let's hope Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Eccleston can pull it off, because it sounds like there is a lot going on.

If that review is to be believed, I'll probably pick the movie up as a DVD rental 6 months from now.

The terrorist leader from the UK version of GIJoe, Action Force, was some kind of Lord. So they really did throw in the kitchen sink, but did so haphazardly.

In the high-tech stuff's defense, GIJoe did have at least one jet-pack and several different laser weapons. (Two laser troops, Flash and Sci-fi, come to mind, along with the Laser Cannon and the Persuader laser tank.) So I'll give them that. The rest of the shit I pass on.

And God, they really did go with the international shit. The pit is in Egypt??? The Egyptians won't let our military play tennis in their territory and the pit is there???

Marone!!!

I really don't think this is that bad at all. I read the prequel book, "Above And Beyond" and enjoyed the new take on Duke and Ripcord.

It puzzles me that this movie has been so totally condemned even before the first frame was reportedly shot. I dunno, maybe it's because I'm not a G.I. Joe purist or anything like that, but any movie that got characters named "Destro" and "Cobra Commander" can't be taken that seriously to begin with, IMO...

It wasn't until I saw the suits they were wearing that I knew this movie would be shit. Seeing is believing and I saw the suits. I can't accept any serious claim this is a GI Joe movie in name only. Like I said in the other thread, it's some random action-terrorist movie with the names changed to sell what's going to be a terrible movie.

I wouldn't consider myself a "purist" either, though I had a good handful of the 80's toys and kept up with the 80's comic for several years. The thing about it was it had characters called "Destro" and "Cobra Commander" and still managed to take them somewhat seriously. Same thing with the old Transformers cartoon and comic series. I haven't seen the new Transformers movie yet and probably won't ever bother, ever since I saw the radically redesigned look of the bots, I knew they had taken it to a place that wasn't the same as the originals. For comparison, I thought the new Trek movie was great, because they made an effort to make the connections and keep some of the original concepts (and in the name of full disclosure, there's still a part of me that thinks it could have been done within the "regular" timeline).

The people doing the original comics and such took something they knew was a little out there, and filled the rest of the world with things that were down to earth (relationships and such). That's how good scifi/fantasy is supposed to work. You have an anchor to reality and then you go nuts.
