FYI, Google account default limit is 15Gb, including GMail

Back when Google first came out with GMail, it had a fairly generous storage allocation. And over time, they bumped it up. I remember at one point getting notification that max storage was now 8Gb. Seemed like so far beyond anything I'd use up. Curious enough, there was a "Beta" marker for it too. For a long while I wondered that if and when they got out of "beta" mode, would all GMail accounts now be faced with some monthly fee? And with an email account well established plus a huge trove of emails stored, many people would probably end up reluctantly paying.

Later on, Google advanced its services to provide a general "Google" account to be used for all kinds of things, including storage of images and documents. A "Google Drive." Total storage: 15Gb by default.

Apparently that storage space is inclusive of GMail. So if you end up maximizing your Google Drive, you could end up finding that you're not getting any new emails because you've run out of space.

I posted about this as a "heads up", in case some folks here weren't aware of this.

Just a couple of related tips:
  • Use the GMail search option and locate all messages that are 5mb or higher. Review and delete. Repeat at 3Mb or 2Mb, depending upon how many emails there are. Do this for Inbox and Sent.
  • After deleting, clear the trash folder as well. It may take a few minutes before the storage size is revised.
  • In Google Drive, review your file storage and delete anything large and likely no longer needed (or archived locally).
