FX/editing wishlist/technical/related discussion for STNG-R

Re: What new FX/editing do you want to see in the STNG-R?

Well today is the rumoured announcement day, I will be refreshing the newsfeeds regularly until I see the annoucement! If your favourite news site crashes then it might be because of me pressing F5!

I hope we get a screencap or clip!

The video clip with the HD warp effect is breathtaking.

Re: What new FX/editing do you want to see in the STNG-R?

I just wish they had released a couple of 1080p frames in addition to the announcement video ... would make for awesome wallpapers.

Re: What new FX/editing do you want to see in the STNG-R?

I wonder why the shadows don't match.

OMG, the never really filmed the series at all, its a faaaaake!!

 My take on the Moon landing conspiracy hysteria.

Obviously it was a quick and dirty approximate edit by Trekcore.

Re: What new FX/editing do you want to see in the STNG-R?

I'm normally an OAR stickler, but I get a chubby every time I think of watching TNG in 1.85:1 Widescreen! If they could frame the shots properly, I'd be OK with them making this change. As for SFX, I believe they're using the original model work, etc... which is as it should be.

Re: What new FX/editing do you want to see in the STNG-R?

Digital Bits are saying that they are making 1.33:1 and 1.78:1 versions, so I presume the 1.33:1 will go to blu-ray and the 1.78:1 are offered as an option for streaming and offered to TV Stations who would like widescreen programming.

Re: What new FX/editing do you want to see in the STNG-R?

I wish they would release the trailer as a download at a much higher bitrate than the highly compressed youtube version!

Re: What new FX/editing do you want to see in the STNG-R?

Even in a compressed 720p YouTube clip, the improvement is obvious. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Re: What new FX/editing do you want to see in the STNG-R?

I would love to see this in 1.78:1 HD.

That's one I wouldn't be to sorry to be replaced entirely.
That is a really bad shot. at least as a still.
Can't think of a worse case of messed up scales AND lighting problems.

Now this is going to look a lot better in HD. The recompositing will remove the overexposure, for one thing. Then in much higher resolution. And if they want, they can still resize some of the ships.

Re: What new FX/editing do you want to see in the STNG-R?

So my understanding of the press release it that the effects shots will just be a recomposition of the original effects? I am kind of disappointed by this news, I will get sick of seeing the same effects shot again and again in 1080p like I did watching it in SD. I was hoping for some new CG ships, some new shots of the Enterprise in orbit around planets, a replacement of all those Excelsior class ships. But we will not have them now.

Re: What new FX/editing do you want to see in the STNG-R?

Personally, I'm amazed that CBS decided to re-comp the FX. It's a hell of alot of work, but the detail is more than we'd likely have seen with new (not to mention probably cheap and rushed) CG. Just imagine how Tin Man will look now

There are a few scenes in the series though where I don't see an alternative other than new CG. My first thought was the CG asteroid in Masks. There's no way that would've been rendered in HD back in '93, so I imagine it'll look pretty bad upscaled to 1080p. Was the alien in Galaxy's Child CG too? Looked it to me, but that ep's from '91...

Then there's shots within the live action scenes, like phasers and transporters. Were they all optical, even in the late seasons?

Yes, most of the shots of it (well, 'them' really) were CG. I understand a model was built, but I have no idea if it made it into any finished shots.

I love the idea of this shot, but in reality its a horrible, horrible shot.

Not only is the lightening way off, but my God how big those Bird of Prey's are. It's just laughable.

Has this been confirmed, or are we simply assuming it to be the case? Maybe they're just doing some fancy (and useless) upscaling process that looks like shit?
