Future Olympic Games Bids - 2016

Which city do you think will host the Olympics in 2016?

With this being an Olympic year, and the Games of the XXXI Olympiad to be decided next year in Denmark. The final candidate cities will be shortlisted in June 2008. So let's here are the cities that are bidding for the right to the game:-

  • Baku, Azerbaijan
  • Chicago, United States
  • Doha, Qatar
  • Madrid, Spain
  • Prague, Czech Republic
  • Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
  • Tokyo, Japan
 
I voted Rio, I don't think there has been an Olympics in South America, has there?

Without knowing anything about the politics involved (who has how much money to spend to bribe the IOC member, etc.), I'd guess that Chicago and Rio have the best chances because of the continental alternation. Maybe Doha too, they have definately got shitloads of money.

Ditto on Chicago and Rio. I'd love to see Rio win the bid.

But would Doha not be way too warm?
 
^Yes it would. My father used to work there. It is usually around 38-40 degrees C even at this time of year and increases to an average of 45 degrees in August. Running a marathon in that kind of weather would be exceptionally dangerous, at least for the Caucasian athletes. (Yes, I'm aware that most mens Olympic marathons going forward are probably going to be won by Kenyans paid to represent rich Middle Eastern countries)

That said, none of the places listed are exactly cold in August.
 
I also voted Rio.:) It would be a fine host city, in a continent which has never held an Olympic Games.
Also, with Brazil hosting the 2014 World Cup, it would be logical to give them the Olympics while they are upgrading all the facilities.

With the 2012 games in London, that should rule out all European bids. Chicago would be a strong bid, however with Los Angeles and Atlanta both hosting Olympics recently, you would hope the would avoid the United States for a few years more.

Tokyo will probably get the Games. A great city, with big Japanese money behind it, they would swing the vote their way.
But I still prefer Rio.

Tokyo's big problem probably are the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
It's quite unlikely that the IOC will give hold the Olympics twice in East Asia within 8 years. If only for the reason, that NBC wouldn't be happy with that.

Well there hasn't been an American city since 1996, so if they miss out here in 2016, it will be 24 years as a minimum between summer Olympics, and too early to tell where the games will be 2020. I know that the Sydney and London people have put their support by the Indians for their bid.
 
Prague has virtually no chance because of London 2012, and imo summer Olympics should be in a place with access to an ocean. ;) (which is why I don't really like the Chicago bid either, but they have a huge lake at least - in the Czech Republic there's nothing)
 
Agreed, perhaps in 20 or 30 years we can think about hosting the Olympics in World of Warcraft, but it's not feasible now. ;)

Based on geography and upcoming Olympics I think the European cities are less likely (due to London 2012), and Tokyo also has that drawback (Beijing 2008), which would leave Rio or Chicago as probable strong candidates. No offense to any Azeris here, but I don't think Baku really has a chance! Doha is intriguing as it is in a nation that is stable, rich, and seems to be fairly liberalized for the region, but I think that the general instability of the middle east will put it out of the running.

I'd like to see South America be represented. I don't think they've ever had a games and other than Hugo Chavez, I don't think anyone has a problem with them other than minor squabbles here and there. Brazil is a good place to have it.

On the other hand, having the games in a Middle Eastern city would be great for the international cooperation stuff the Olympic Committee is so fond of. (As I understand it, that's how London beat out Paris for 2012.)
