Future of USS Enterprise

jdcraun

I was reviewing the next USN air craft carrier class called CVX today and noticed something odd. It is NOT going to be called USS Enterprise, but the Gerald Ford. Enterprise is going to be decommissioned with NO replacement. I don't know about you folks, but I am stark raving MAD!!!

Take a look at the wiki entry....

I have written all my congressional leaders on up to the White House. If you folks care at all, please join me on my quest to right this wrong. The name USS Enterprise should not be left to rust when it should be the name of our future carrier class. All ships after it would be refered to as Enterprise class if it is the lead ship. It was the first nuclear carrier and the most decorated flat top of WWII. The Big E should and will be CVX with your support. Please help out and spread the word. It is going to require a movement to get this done.

Thanks,

Joel Craun

I agree, and am sick of our largest warships being given the names of fat, corrupt old men. However, I'm sure the name "Enterprise" will be reinstated at some point, and I don't think that the U.S. Navy always has to have one in service.

Maybe, just maybe, they're giving the name a pause before using it for the first interstellar science wessel. :p

^ If only!

I agree with the OP; the name of the Enterprise should not be allowed to go by the wayside. It has been passed down since the age of sailing ships, not to mention inspiring Star Trek fans, and by extent, the title of our first Space Ship.

Enterprise is a word that represents the future of humanity; and compared to that, Gerald R. Ford is a word that represents what?

I have sent an E-mail expressing my disappointment regarding this to the White House.

The name hasn't been in continuous use, there's no history being made or broken here. Leave the name be for a while, bring it back when there's an interesting ship to pair it with.

It's about time the name was used for a British ship again. With the proper spelling. HMS Enterprize!

CVX is the carrier of the future, the first new design in the last 40 years. The first in class will determine the name of the line for the next 50 years and be in operation for 80.

Enterprise as a class name doesn't really work for me in any case. Clearly the lesson here is to elect presidents with better names. ;)

Oh man, that's great! -just great!

Trying hard to get to breathe normally after thinking what kind of vessels could be named after Carter, Bush, Shrub and... Clinton!

Thank you for that!

He's also still the only President to have never been elected to any office in the executive branch.

*psst*

It's already been done...

USS Jimmy Carter (SSN-23)

USS George H W Bush CVN-77

Both of these ships have been in the press for a number of years. The Bush holds the distinction of being the final Nimitz class CVN and Carter had a sub named after him since he served in subs when he was in the Navy.

So we'll have both a Ford and a Lincoln in our carrier task force.

Figures.. the government owns parts of GM and Chrysler but neither gets the carrier.

According to the terms of the Abrams' Naval Treaty of 2009 no new or rebooted ship/class shall bear the name Enterprise unless it meets or exceeds all of its predecessor's dimensions by at least 500%.

There are also strict rules about onboard weaponry that must be followed to the letter to avoid receiving a cannon violation.

They're violating canon!

I'd kinda hoped naming them after presidents (and other pols) would end with the Nimitz class.

Should've brought back the names of the WWII carriers (Yorktown, Saratoga, etc.) including Enterprise at some point.
