Future of Next Gen Lit??

If Picard left the series would have to end. It would be too far from TNG then with practically none of the main cast still around. Titan could perhaps take its place.

Yes, I think that's the issue. Keeping Picard in that seat is going to become increasingly unconvincing (particularly now he has a family - and I was glad Paths of Disharmony acknowledged this), but if we remove Picard from the Enterprise, is this TNG anymore?

A series focusing on Picard in a new role would be fascinating, but other than Beverly Crusher of course who would be there with him? And as great as the new characters are, if only La Forge and Worf are left of the originals, will TNG books hold interest for those who aren't committed fans?

In a few years (in-universe) I would expect the final dissolution of the cast. What would that mean other than the end of the mainstream TNG line? Though if Riker and Troi got a series, Picard and Worf could presumably carry a series each...perhaps?

I really like the current TNG set up and hope it continues for as long as possible, but I don't think TNG needs to die as a brand just because the whole crew isn't on one ship anymore.

Much like TOS can tell stories from the Excelsior, Ambassador Spock, McCoy and Scotty's later life adventures, Uhura in S.I., etc. And DS9 has not just the station, Defiant, and Bajor, but characters off on adventures in the Gamma Quadrant, on Cardassia, the Aventine, etc. It seems perfectly plausible for TNG to continue with one or two of the original cast on the Enterprise while other's move on to new and varied assignments and careers – which has already got well underway with Titan branching out of the series.

Be careful with your autofill though. It got annoying in your first post.

Even if the continuous series ends, there's lots of stories yet to tell. I'd like to see a story set during the initial 7 year mission. Maybe some during the first two as well, if they can get the tone right. Maybe make stories out of the changes in engineers and whatnot. Lots of episodes left things open to revisitations in later seasons we never got too. And then there's all the later jumps between movies and books. Maybe a few books set with everybody split apart having th come together for some reason. These ain't new but could be fun.

I'd be ok with the idea of Picard accepting promotion to Admiral, yet retaining command of the Enterprise.

In his current assignment as roving 'trouble shooter' for the President/UFP I would think the higher rank would aid Picard greatly in his dealings with world leaders and foreign governments.

I sincerely hope that Picard remains aboard the Enterprise for the foreseeable future. There has been sufficient shake-up of the status quo in the TNG relaunch. We're down to four original characters left aboard the ship - Picard, Geordi, Worf and Beverly. If Picard (and, by extension, Beverly) were to leave, the series would be unrecognizable as TNG.

I think it's logical for Picard to consider promotion or retirement, for the sake of his family. In fact, maybe it would be interesting for one of the future novels to explore that idea (Picard actually accepting a desk job), but ultimately have Picard realize that he isn't happy in that type of role and return to the Captain's chair.

An option that hasn't been mentioned is for the novels to explore the backstory from the Countdown comic series. If they were to do that, it would reintroduce Data as the new captain, which could be cool if done right.

Nah some characters need to stay dead ad much as I love Data.

Personally, as I thought "Countdown" was four different shades of horrible, I hope the novel-verse goes in a different direction entirely.

Quoted for truth.

I think TNG could survive a split up of the crew if the books that followed them into their future lives were few and far between, with the rest of the TNG line being devoted to going back to previous eras. This would allow for the return of Data, Riker, and Troi. There are lots of gaps to fill in, especially in the Enterprise-E days. The books that followed them in the current era could be rare, and could be supplemented by guest appearances in other series as well, kinda like Voyager did in the pre-Full Circle period.

If Picard and Bevery left then I really think TNG as we know it would have to end. I don't think that necessarily needs to the end of the characters though, I would be very happy to see them pop up in guest roles, or maybe with the occasional stand alone focusing on their post Enterprise careers.

I really like the crew we have right now though, so I hope they stick together for a while.

It'll be Worf, and reconstructed Data, Lore, B4, Lal, and Mother. The mission will be to ressurrect Soong and bring got the age of the mecha to combat the age of the great changeling invasion.
