Future of Ghostbusters and Riddick Games Unclear

Didn't I read that all the high-dollar voices for Ghostbusters had already been recorded and paid for?

Aykroyd and Ramis wrote the script, and they, Murray, Hudson, Potts, William Atherton and Brian Doyle-Murray have recorded voiceovers and provided their likenesses, yes.

Hard to believe they wouldn't follow through with something they've already invested so much in...but I know such things DO happen from time to time.

They're not common in the game industry, though, especially not when a publisher (Sierra) had to pay a significant amount of money to get the IP license in the first place. Based on Sierra PR comments earlier today, I'm sure the game will be sold off to another publisher (possibly even back to Sony, which could use another highly touted PS3 exclusive).

Query: Does it show a lack of confidence in the material, do you think, or does it show that the company is having financial issues?

I was really looking forward to the release of Ghostbusters...hope this business doesn't interfere. This is the first time I've heard of the Riddick game! The cinematics for Butcher Bay were released in a "Trilogy" package with Pitch Black, and the Chronicles of Riddick here in Canada. I assume the same elsewhere.

Sierra was owned by Vivendi Universal, which recently merged with Activision. As I posted earlier, I think this is simply a case of the newly merged company clearing out some of the old Vivendi divisions (like Sierra) which have historically under-performed in a financial sense, and instead focusing on the few Vivendi elements, like Blizzard, that are basically licenses to print money (in Blizzard's case, World of Warcraft).

Ah yes, I DID read that, but didn't put two & two together for the specific property in question. :)

Some Seirra big-wig said of Ghostbusters specifically "it has NOT been cancelled" - if any of these titles is boned, I doubt GB will get that shaft. GB is likely the safest title. It's got as high of an interest as Scarface from last year and that sold like mad.

Sonic Adventure 2 I do love actually but 1 I thought was basically unplayable...

I read this morning that Ghostbusters will very likely still get a release but through a different developer, but the fate of the others is a lot less clear.

Aand Sonic hasn't had a good game since 1995?

Damn it. I anticipated this response and yet my love for Sonic is still hurt.

Then again, I don't own any post-95 Sonic games... because they all suck.

But still. That Spyro the Dragon could be getting yet more games at the expense of the mighty Ghostbusters... sickens me.

I think Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 for the Dreamcast were the last good Sonic games (1999 and 2001 respectively). The new one looks like they might finally have some of that magic back though.
Sonic and the Secret Rings on the Wii was fairly good, not fantastic, but I thought it was better than a lot of Sonic games.

If it becomes a PS3 exclusive I'll be pissed.
Since Ghostbusters was developed for pretty much every platform currently on the market I doubt it will become a PS3 exclusive, it would be a huge waist of money.

I'm not really worried about Ghostbusters, I know it will find a publisher. I'm most worried about World in Conflict Soviet Assault (hopefully THQ will pick it up) and Brutal Legends.

A hopeful update was just posted on Ars Technica regarding Ghostbusters. Not cancelled, just delayed.

While Sierra reps were quick to assure inquiring minds that the game was definitely not canceled, rumors have still been rife throughout the internet claiming that it will be; this doesn't seem right, given how much promotion the game has already received. Variety's Ben Fritz, tired of hearing all the half-truths, got in touch with Sony Pictures (who still holds the rights to Ghostbusters) and managed to get some answers on just what's going to happen to the game. Aside from the generic info that Sony is working with Activision/Blizzard to find a new publisher, a representative told Fritz, "[the situation] has presented [Sony Pictures Consumer Products] with an opportunity to reevaluate the game release marketing strategy to potentially coincide with the 25th anniversary of the original film in '09."

I sort of doubt Ghostbusters will go PS3 exclusive, especially since Terminal Reality isn't the caliber of developer Sony usually approaches. That said, PS3 is the lead platform and the team have commented that they'd be able to do almost twice as much stuff if it wasn't multiplatform.

It's a really strange situation for such a high profile property.

I saw "Coming Soon" display cases for Ghostbusters yesterday and thought maybe it was coming out this year still.

Oh well, it looks pretty cool, I hope it comes out in the first half of 2009.
