Future of Ghostbusters and Riddick Games Unclear

That's what Gamespot are saying.

Activision are keeping Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Ice Age, Prototype and one other title from Vivendi leaving the future of other titles such as Ghostbusters, The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Athena, World at Conflict: Soviet Assault and a number of other titles uncertain.

They're STILL churning out Crash and Spyro games!? Those two haven't had a good game since... since... 2001?!

I'm reasonably confident that Ghostbusters will be released; it's been flagged for almost a year as one of Vivendi's tentpole releases for Fall 2009, and the company spent a not-inconsiderable amount of cash to acquire the license for a multi-platform release from Sony.

If I had to guess, it looks like Activision is systematically eliminating most of the (historically speaking, under-performing) Vivendi divisions, outside of Blizzard and Radical, and will sell off elements like Ghostbusters in an effort to recover some expenses incurred during the acquisition.

Yup, most of those games including GB will definitely be released by one publisher on another. As soon as they figure out what is going where and who will purchase what, those companies will announce them on their own schedules.

^ Exactly. It wouldn't make sense to have already spent so much on the game and then not release it.

Aand Sonic hasn't had a good game since 1995?

Damn it. I anticipated this response and yet my love for Sonic is still hurt.

Then again, I don't own any post-95 Sonic games... because they all suck.

But still. That Spyro the Dragon could be getting yet more games at the expense of the mighty Ghostbusters... sickens me.

I think Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 for the Dreamcast were the last good Sonic games (1999 and 2001 respectively). The new one looks like they might finally have some of that magic back though.

I certainly hope Ghostbusters isn't lost in all the hustle and bustle. I've been looking forward to it since it was announced the cast was coming back! That and the videos they've shown make it look like a hell of a good time.

An Activision rep informed me that Ghostbusters hasn't been canceled, Riddick et al, well that's still a bit unclear, he didn't talk about those.

OT: Does anyone know how well the Riddick games sold?

There was only one (Escape from Butcher Bay), and it didn't sell particularly well. It sold 110,000 units in its first three weeks of release, but largely flatlined after that -- and the PC release didn't sell especially well, either. A shame, really, considering how good of a game it was.

Wait, is Dark Athena the rerelease of Butcher Bay?

Anyhow, it looks like this will probably be the final nail in the Sierra label coffin... and I'm sure those adventure franchises will be gone for good. I only hope new management doesn't shut down KQ9, even though they have an agreement with Vivendi.

Didn't I read that all the high-dollar voices for Ghostbusters had already been recorded and paid for?

Hard to believe they wouldn't follow through with something they've already invested so much in...but I know such things DO happen from time to time.
