Future Blu-Ray Releases

The original Phantom of the Opera just hit Blu on the 1st of this month. I'd like to own a copy eventually even though it's on Netflix.

It's the 1954 movie. It'll contain the original, sub-titled cut, and the re-edited, dubbed American version.

Criterion Godzilla

I'm curious to see how it differs from the Gojira Blu-ray. It boasts a "new high-definition digital restoration," but I wonder how different it'll be.

Great cover art, though.

The one you linked to was from Classic Media and has problems

Classic Media's Blu-ray of Gojira is a major disappointment that can't really be recommended. The HD encoding is interlaced (1080i) instead of progressive (1080p), which leads us to suspect that the source is the same used on the earlier standard def release -- billed as mastered in "Native Hi-Def".

Every comparison with the existing Deluxe Collector's Edition DVD makes that release seem a better purchase option. That disc's variable contrast and odd ghosting issues that were undoubtedly in the tape element provided by Toho. The new Blu-ray looks identical except in the monster destruction scenes, which are timed much darker. Under these conditions the added resolution of HD adds nothing whatsoever to the visuals -- the Blu-ray looks like the standard DVD but with additional problems.

Criterion will most certainly do as much as they can to make sure their release will be to a much higher standard.

Blu's I'm looking forward to include Harry Potter 7.2, and two other Godzilla flicks Vs Megalon and Destroy All Monsters.

The only Blu-Ray on my mind at the moment:

Available Tuesday.

:techman:

If you get it at Best Buy you get a "Rash" T-shirt!

I wish they had recorded some new commentaries, as season three and four are a little bare compared to the first two years. For now, my Starburst sets will do. I'll replace them when these come down in price.

I wonder when/if Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars will be released in HD?

Interesting, I didn't know that. Thanks.

I hope West Side Story has a good transfer -- I bet those bright colors will look beautiful in HD, if that's done properly.

Different production company so I understand. There was a very Blu-ray version of TPKW released in Germany that appeared to be poorly upscaled SD.

My wish list contains the following titles that have yet to be announced for release in the UK:

The Abyss
Lawrence of Arabia
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Finding Nemo

^^ I had hoped The Abyss (and True Lies) would have been released in the wake of Avatar's success, but no dice.

The Indy movies are in the works according to recent interviews with Spielberg, although no release date has been announced.

Spielberg also mentioned that they're working on Jaws. I wonder if they're making some big Spielberg package like they did for Stanley Kubrick.
