Funny tempest in a teapot (or short skirt) - Daily Mail criticism

Just saw this on the DW News Page. Seems someone at the Daily Mail doesn't like Amy's choice of attire because she thinks DW companions shouldn't be sexy!

It's got to be a joke column, unless the writer has honestly never seen Doctor Who! (Or Torchwood - note the Cybermen with boobs comment!)

It's worth clicking through to the Daily Mail article for a nice full-length photo of Karen Gillan in her police outfit. Unless you're offended by such stuff, of course! ;)

Someone should show Allison Pearson a picture of Peri.

Retarded paper anyway. Even outside of Britain it is regarded as a joke.

you know I think ive said this before, but its worth saying.

The RTDs era of the show in terms of attractive women in skimpy outfits has been poor, sure he has cast some attractive women, and we have seen those women in a few sexy outfits, but compared to the classic series, women in skimpy outfits is something the RTDs era Doctor Who lacked.

Rose in the dinner ladies outfit is a good example of this, whilst Billie Piper is an attractive woman, RTDs has no idea how to dress her in a sexual manner, what person in there right mind would put Billie Piper in a dinner ladies outfit? its a shame RTDs did not have Secret Diary of a Call Girl for refrence, when he was writing for Rose. Failing that an Anne Summers catalogue is a good place to start.

The Moffat era Doctor Who seems to point towards a revival of some elements from the Classic series, one of them being the companion dressed in something sexy.

i doubt it, mate. the Daily Fail is a paper of right-wing facists and nutters who hate immigrants, non-christians, the working classes and labour.

guess she never saw Romana in her school uniform or Leela in a chamois leather bikini...

:guffaw:

Assuming you're joking...I really hope you're joking...

The whole thing really. I'm just wondering how even RTD could have written it in that Rose went into school undercover dressed in an Anne Summers' outfit? I mean I know they do school girl outfits but...

Well if nothing else there's a nice image first thing ;)

I said Anne Summers would have been a good place to start, I meant he could have used it for refrence, not that he should have dress Rose exclusively in Anne Summers outfits.

He should have "read" it, to get ideas. Seriously I know RTDs is gay, but how can anyone think that a dinner ladies outfit is the best use of such an attractive woman Im not just talking about School Reunion.

Using the Psychic Paper Rose could have been undercover as a student teacher, a classroom assistant, a temp receptionist, or even the school nurse.

It's been a while since I saw School Reunion, but wasn't Rose being a "lowly" mean she and The Doctor were able to find more out in the end. Also, wasn't The Doctor an undercover teacher, what would you suggest he become then? The Caretaker? If they were both teachers, they wouldn't have had the reach into the school they had and it would be very boring.

Also, apart from on a night out or in the bedroom, how many women do you see wearing Ann Summers or variants on their outfits in everyday life Wamdue?

...and? The choice was dinner lady. It's a bit more fun for the commoner to be in a commoner position. I doubt it was a choice of "Hmm... maybe Billie would look hot as Dinnerlady Doris?"

as ive explained before I was not expecting Rose to wear Anne Summers outfits in her "normal" life, I was just saying RTDs could have looked at the catalogue to get some ideas of what kind of sexy real life clothing he could put Billie in. A good producer would know that putting Billie in sexy outfits is going to be good for ratings.

as for Rose being a dinner lady, it is true that her doing that job was of help, and the Doctor might have had a clue based on the fact that the school was still serving chips against government advice.

Have you ever been into an Ann Summers or onto it's website? Now I know what you're saying and yes, Ann Summers outfits, or similar can be very sexy on the right woman and the right context. In the context of a BBC One programme on prime time television two hours before the watershed, it really, really isn't appropriate. Using it as a base line for her costume design, just comes across as far too shallow and not something I'd promote.

Now I imagine that the costume department put Rose in what they did, jeans and some form of tshirt/top was because that's what they thought the character felt comfy in, no more no less and given that Billie is a naturally attractive young lady (although being from Swindon) she could probably look sexy in a bin bag!

As for ratings, if the storyline is good and the acting is good, whether or not the cast are dressed sexily shouldn't be a consideration even though the actors themselves are good looking.

as ive said, RTDs would only be looking at it for ideas on how to dress an attractive woman in a sexy way, which is something he really didnt do that well with Rose or Martha. Ok maybe there is a little more underwear in Anne Summers than is helpful to my point, I was just looking for an example of a shop that sold womens clothing which makes them even more attractive than they already are.

If girls wearing sexy costumes is part of Classic Who, then it should be part of New Who as well.

You might be right about the bin bag thing, if we wait long enough ITV 2 will test that out for us.
