Geordi built model ships in Season 2, yet strangely he had to ask Riker to identify a part of a ship in the holodeck in GENERATIONS right before their Red Alert to Amargosa Observatory.

Or he just built it without knowing what everything was. I used to build Airfix planes as a kid, but that doesn't make be an expert in jet fighters.
