Funny names in Immunity Syndrome

He did that every time he had to call Kyle by name. Probably had to do with Shatner's upbringing in Canada.
The last time this question came up, I think someone said that the actual shooting script had his name as Cowell. I might be wrong about that.
Maybe the producers thought that Kyle could not be the Transporter chief and also be a helmsman, so they called him Cowell. Like it's less odd to give the same actor a different name.
John Winston also looks a lot different in this episode. His hair is styled almost like Chekov's. And he's wearing a red tunic in the teaser, but a yellow one for the rest of the show, apparently to facilitate the use of helm station stock footage.

I think he said it correct in most episodes but always with an accent, but in Immunity Syndrome he definitely called him Cowl on many occasions! Maybe Kyle filed a grievance with Mr.Spock later on and then found himself shuffled back down to engineering and that's why we only saw him in one episode of season three!

That's not a Canadian thing but a Montreal thing. It has to do with being around the French language on a daily basis.
I rewatched "Devil in the Dark" this morning, and Shatner consistently pronounces the name of Lt. Commander Giotto as "Joto." Wouldn't "Gee-OH-toh" be the more typical pronunciation?
If you say "Gee-OH-toh" fast enough, it sounds like "JOH-toh". Like the name of Alexander Siddig and Nana Visitor's kid; it's spelled 'Django', but is it pronounced "JANG-goh" or "Dee-YANG-goh"? Depends on how fast you say it.
