I am not sure it's the proper subforum, but since FMA is both a manga and a TV series...as well as a story taking place in an alternate universe with its specific technology...

Anyway, are there FMA fans here ? That'd be cool to discuss alchemy and talk about our favourite homonculi

I'm a big fan of the Brotherhood anime. One of the best plotted stories I've seen and an amazing journey.

Yeah, I heard about the live action movie, but I'm a bit disappointed about the characters' looks. I mean, people from Amestris are basically caucasian, and Ishval people are more like arabians...So I'm disappointed at seeing asian actors instead, just like I was terribly dissapointed at the Avatar (white-washed) movie cast...
That being said, I may watch the movie anyway when it's available on Netflix or another legal streaming platform, just out of curiosity !

Sorry to bump this thread, but I'm delving into the second anime - FMA Brotherhood - for the very first time, and had a few thoughts/observations I wanted to share on the first 8 episodes:
1) I really like the premise of the series and the English voice cast, especially Alphonse's actor

2) I was wondering if I'm the only person out there who feels like the show kind of overplays Ed's "height complex" and, at least through the first couple of episides, the joke of people thinking Al is the Fullmetal Alchemist

3) I probably shouldn't be, but I'm fascinated with Lust, Gluttony, and Envy

4) My two favorite episodes through The Fifth Laboratory are An Alchemist's Anguish and Hidden Truths, and I'm not quite sure what that says about me

5) I loved the way that the reveal about what it takes to make a Philosopher's Stone was handled, because I think it wouldn't have worked if it were overplayed

6) I wish they'd cut back on the stereotypically gay undertones of Alex Louis Armstrong's inclusion as a figure of levity, because it's a little bit grating

7) Alphonse letting Barry the Chopper's taunting get to him in The Fifth Laboratory felt a little bit out-of-character to me, but we'll see where it goes

Beech I dislike dubs....the Live action was ok, like the Animé better.

It is just a joke, lots of animé series do this....like a few other "traditions" they have!
These days I wacth more Animé than anything else.

After decades of endless US made stuff......you get that deja-vu alittle too often ;)
Besides I like their crazy humour....some of these guys are wonderfully sharp!
Like reading a Terry Pratchett Discworld book!

I never thought Alex to be gay...I rather get the feeling he's described as a very classy and impressive, yet sensitive guy. The stars and flowers running gag is more about his classy side in my opinion. That's a common gag in anime about classy guys.

^ He might not be characterized as gay in narrative, but the way he is drawn, animated, and voiced evokes, at least for me, the worst of the "flamboyantly gay man" stereotype, and it doesn't really do the character any favors, at least for me.

I dunno...As I said, many classy guys in anime are shown the same way, with that flamboyant and a bit ridiculous approach. So it doesn't bother me as I rather consider it a very 'typically Japanese' sort of humour
But obviously, what doesn't bother me may bother you, and vice versa.

^ Can you define "classy" for me in this context so I have a better understanding of your point of view, please?

Because I genuinely don't know what you mean when you use the word in this context.

Mmmh...Classy in the context I used it would mean...someone who has incredible charm, presence and who's admired for their charming attitude. Like ie Kaname in Vampire Knight.

^ Thank you. I'm still not seeing how Alex Armstrong's depiction fits into that 'mold' and isn't reliant on the worst stereotypical negative elements of the "flamboyantly gay man" archetype, but "to each their own".

Could this just be a cultural difference between the US and the Japan?
