The distinction between the first comic in the thread and this one reminds me why I don't like Penny Arcade.
The first one was cute but that made me laff like a Romulan hyena.

Yeah, the PA one is funn"ier" than the OP one, but both are in the end great. But the PA one feels more "adult geek" as I could probably see myself doing something similar. And because Gabe is a hillarious Gaming Coming Staple "Nut."
No... Gabe is being mean. He's being a total asshole. He's going off on a huge alpha geek tirade about something inconsequential. It's making fun of him, and all those who would completely overreact and fly off the handle about something that really doesn't matter, like having a 0 in front of a registration number, NCC-0514 vrs NCC-514.
I suppose I don't really get that kind of humor.
Getting over-sensitive about geeky details is funny. Lashing out at someone who's just trying to be nice in the process moves one into the "asshole" category, and I don't find such people particularly funny.

You realize it's just a drawing and an old woman wasn't really cussed out, right?
What's funny about the PA strip to me is Gabe's over reaction is just so, well, "geeky" maybe a "real" geek would be less vulgar and rude but it's humorous in the fantasy land of the strip and knowing Gabe.
Further, have you SEEN some of the posts here when people get uppity over details?
