It was actually in the centerfold of the 2011 Ships of the Line calendar (text by Michael Okuda), but I cribbed it for Forgotten History. Basically ring-type drives have trouble changing direction at high warp.

Although it's possible that some recent breakthrough has overcome that limitation. Or perhaps it was decided that a ringship was a good fit for slipstream for some reason.

Since in the images of slipstream we've seen involve a tunnelling effect, it could be the ring design might stabilize the tunnel effect more.

Pardon my ignorance... is this a WIP for a design that will be used in the books (a la Aventine)? Or is this for fun?

Anywho... it's funny, because I'm a bit of a traditionalist in terms of Trek ship designs. I'm a fan of the standard saucer section / nacelle paradigm and usually am not a fan when I see designs diverge from that.

Having said that... this looks awesome.

Then, when we see the NX01 for the first time, it seems that Starfleet ship design in the 24th century is based only on Human design. Where's the input from all the other 150 species making up the Federation?

So, to see something Starfleet, but with influences from non-Human species..... YES!!! Huge, big, YES!!!!

Although not external, the computer interfaces on Enterprise's Vulcan starships very much resembled the TOS movie era Starfleet displays (and one large display in "Fusion" even looked a lot like a static version of the STXI Enterprise's swirly perimiter station graphics)

Haven't you mentioned before that slipstream-capable ships ought to be narrower in shape compared to the standard wide saucer Starfleet has typically employed in the past? Something like that, at least. I'm sure I've got something wrong.

Anyway, it sounds reasonable (to my sleep-deprived brain, at least) that a ringship would be a natural fit for slipstream, since a warp ring would probably suggest a narrower design for the ship's main fuselage.

Anyway, the design looks great, Mark! I can't wait to see the finished product.

This kind of covers everything I'd planned to say originally. As for "where is the non-human tech" - it could be that a lot of that is in the internal systems of course. It'd be interesting to see what a Starfleet ship built for non-humanoids would look like on the inside...

Loved the Vesta and the Merian, so very interested in how this one turns out.

Also, the bridge layout of the Andorian starship Kumari had some subtle similarities to TOS, like twin helm/nav consoles in front and outward-facing crew stations in a ring around the captain's chair, even though the plan was more open.

And we do have evidence from ENT that some familiar Starfleet tech did come from alien powers. NX-01 didn't have deflector shields or tractor beams, but the Vulcans and Andorians did. So it's a safe bet that those technologies were among the Vulcan and Andorian contributions to the Federation Starfleet.

It's not finished yet. Mark's still working on it, and he posted a few sketches on his blog, with some ideas. His last posts was a render of some very detailed bussard collectors for the new nacelles.
