"?" from the Blast Door Map

Something came to mind the other day in regards to recent revelations this season. Remember WWWAAAYY back in season two when we first saw the legendary Blast Door Map and smack in the middle of it was a "?" which sent all of us (Locke included) into a frenzy of speculation? It was seemingly resolved rather lamely in the episode "?" but I recall theories in this forum about there being some mystical source on the Island or even "the heart of the Island" (I seem to recall at least one person speculating this notion).

So I can't help but wonder...were we right? Was the "?" actually referring to The Source and not the Pearl? Of course, this begs the question, why didn't Radzinsky or Kelvin (or someone else who might have operated the Swan but we didn't see) actually approach The Source or possibly enter it?

Or am I just barking up the wrong tree?

From what we've learned about it so far, I don't think it's possible to find the mystical Light unless you know that it's there. It's not something one of the Dharma people could have just stumbled upon by accident, so in all likelihood it's not something you could draw a map to.

I think they intended us to believe that DHARMA thought it was something more than another DHARMA station (then the writers pulled the rug from under everyone else like they tended to do back in those days), but whether it was The Source I don't know. I find it funny, given what we know now, that The Orchid (and possibly ironically The Swan) was arguably more relevant to the Source's power than the Question Mark.

I suppose it's possible that they thought there would be a "heart" of the island but were not sure where it was so just put a '?' in the middle of the island.

... and as fate would have it (or coincidence?) it led John and Eko to the Pearl, and all its implications re: the ultimate fate of the Swan, Desmond's role in the grand scheme of things, etc.

This was just another dead-end mystery and not nearly enough was done with Kelvin and Radzinsky and the Blast Door or a lot of season 2's mysteries centering on Dharma and the stations. Points deducted, Damon and Carlton--tsk tsk

I loved the mysteriousness of Dharma in season two, but I agree that the "?" had a duff conclusion. I find that season two has more than a few problems anyway, which is why it's my least favourite season during rewatch.

Hello Lost people! I've never posted in this sub forum before. And I haven't not seen much of the show, but I'd like to give my prediction before the ending

I predict the island is some kind of illusion: either a holodeck of sorts (tame), or possibly a drug induced group hallucination type of virtual reality (which could be because some psychoactive substance was vented in the airplane) which is what I'll focus on here.

In their depressions, this made them believe the plane crashed, etc. In the early seasons we learned that many of the characters were uncomfortable with life for whatever reason, and perhaps wanted an escape: Kate was on the run, Locke was bitter about his father, and burdened with his wheelchair, Hurley didn't like how the world treated him differently after winning his fortune, etc. Most may have had a desire for escapism into a virtual world where the mystery of that world was a distraction from their own realities. So perhaps that is what their minds formed in response to airborne substance.

The "Source" appears to be accessible in different areas, though. I imagine the Cereberus vents on the map all lead to the Source.

It'd be cooler if the Orchid was the ? station rather than the Pearl...which was pretty useless as a station mystery-wise.

During Season Two I always insisted it was some great secret heart of the Island. Even after "?" aired I still said it. But then the writers said in an interview that it was just the Pearl. Now, I'd still like to think that it's the big secret. But remember Radzinsky didn't know EVERYTHING, so it probably was just the Pearl.

Right. In the penultimate ep., Jacob told Jack that the Heart was on the other side of the bamboo forest, and Jack said, "There's nothing over there," and Jacob said, "Yes there is".

It's one of those <ominous voice> Religious Things! <ominous voice>, in which "believing is seeing".
