"We lost a lot of money on the show," Reilly (Network President) recently told attendees of the Television Critics Association winter press tour. "We're not in the business of losing money."

"Abrams added that if Fox were to cancel the show, it's possible that Warner Bros. could shop the show somewhere else. However, such a move rarely results in a pickup elsewhere."

"Fringe" also is the lowest-rated of all network shows on the Big Four. The only shows that have smaller audiences are found on The CW, and even then, "The Vampire Diaries" is just 10 percent behind."

Fringe" has lived on Friday nights since last season, and has been chalking up the network's lowest ratings. Yet, the network has kept the show around, mostly because of revised licensing deals with Warner Bros., which produces the show, and a desire to keep what it feels is high-quality program on the air."

"In the meantime, Reilly is trying to keep fan campaigns to save the show at a minimum.
"Please don't start the letter-writing campaign right now, I can't take it," he said."

Yeah i say this is the last season. So better starting that letter writing campaign.

I really love this show though. Sucks it on same time as supernatural. Stupid networks.

I love Fringe, but I feel that this should be the last season, anyway. I don't care for the direction that they've taken, seemingly destroying the Blue and Red universes for this new Black Timeline. And now Peter is going to try and go back to his own. Seems like too much of a convoluted storyline to me.

Somehow there is no way they are losing money the commercials they sell take care of it...... Correct me if I am wrong....lol :)

I believe it was The Hollywood Reporter which said that this was a negotiating tactic to get whatever production company that owns Fringe to lower that fee. Odds are it'll get at least a 13 episode final season which will bring it to a comfortable 100 episodes which is great for syndication.

I really liked Season Three, but I do not like this season. I miss the Evil Universe  I just don't care about this new continuity. And the stories have been so uninteresting. I miss flipping between the two worlds.

I am interested in where they might go with this plot. But at the same time a little voice is whispering in my ear "remember, JJ also made Alias and Lost..."

Oh shit! And I just bought myself the first season. I guess I will wait and see if the show gets a proper ending and not some huge cliffhanger without any hope for resolution.

The money they make from commercials could easily be less than what it costs to buy the show from WB. It's also possible that the fee Fox pays WB has now gotten low enough that WB doesn't generate enough revenue to pay for production costs. If both of those are the case, then the show is likely headed to cancellation unless WB can find new revenue streams or cut costs.
