Re: Fringe 4X15 - "A Short Story About Love" (Live Commentary, Spoile

But see this isn't the first time the show has used Love[TM] in lieu of a scientific explanation--last season it was stated that the outcome of which universe survived hinged on which Olivia Peter chose:rolleyes: then there was episode "6B" that talked about Love[TM].

Fringe always uses some crackpot science in their stories but the whole love angle for the series' mythology is lame--it reminds me of the whole "only love can produce a Cylon child" from nBSG.

It just is bullshit of the worst kind. People love family members and despite that people still die or can't be cured of serious illnesses. Alzheimers patients have loved ones but they still isn't enough to protect those memories.

In my opinion the only thing the show had going for it was its mythology and over the last two seasons they managed to fuck it up--it smacks of the same weak writing of LOST or nBSG where the writers can't come up with anything clever after building up these arcs for years and in the end go for the lazy and cheap magical mumbo jumbo route.

Fox just needs to put this show out of its misery and try to find something more worthy to fill its slot next season. The writers have had four years and they've drug their feet with boring filler and a drawn out arc.

I understand that you dislike the love angle but I'm confused why you would argue against it based on what happens in the real world. I doubt there's been a single episode of Fringe in which numerous examples of ridiculous unreal things didn't occur. Why would a technobabble fix for the universes be better than an (for lack of a better term) emotionbabble one?

P.S. Don't mistake this as a defense for the overall mythology arc of Fringe. I think that part of the show is pretty bad. Mainly because it feels like every season or so the writers are hoping you'll forget what happened previously because they were never quite sure where to go with it. And it's partly because of that that I'm watching this show mainly for some of the characters and actors and that's probably why the love angle works for me.

I'm not saying my dislike for the love angle is because of real world reasons--I understand Fringe is fiction. I just don't like an arc to boil down to such feelgood mystical notions like--love can do anything because it is so powerful.

Maybe if I cared a lick about the characters then I might be able to be more forgiving of the weak writing with regards to the arc but for me the only thing the series had going for it was the arc. I just don't buy Olivia/Peter's supposed romance. And it isn't that I'm one of those sfffans who hates hook-ups. I was a Mulder.Scully shipper, swooned over Riker/Troi on TNG to name a few.

To be fair this love angle kind of explains why Olivia and Walter were being haunted by Peter at the beginning of the season. I guess it was their love that anchored him to them even if they'd forgotten him. Also now that Olivia's memories of the original timeline have returned I wonder if something similar will happen to Walter.

I thought that could be the case when Walter decided to leave the lab in the episode when they were trapped in that town.

Riker/Troi? Swooning?

Say no more.

I guess you know you watch too much sic-fi/horror when you expect the "Happy Reunion" between Peter and Olivia to end with one of them getting ran over by a car.
This would make a great sig. :techman: Mind if I use it sometime?

I was thinking the same thing -- "Wait-- no portentous doom-laden cliffhangery surprise at the last moment? Did the film break?"

I love that Peter and Olivia are back together. Yep, I'm one of those romantic saps who has enjoyed the notion that the workings of the universe are dictated by the way people deal (or don't) with love. Sue me, it works for me, and I think TPTB have stuck faithfully to their framework. I think it helps that I have deep affection for all these characters, and I'll follow them anywhere the show takes them.

I mean, the price Olivia is willing to pay in order to be with Peter -- wow. Kind threw Nina for a loop there, too, I think.

But oh, I feel sorry for Lincoln. At least in the alt-universe, where there was no Peter, alt-Lincoln might be able to win Olivia's heart. But here... :(

I rarely have a chance to watch the show live, but I always make sure to tune into these comments threads when I get caught up. You all are so entertaining, and I really enjoy reading. Thanks :)

Really good episode. I'm glad that this universe is the real one. Although won't it feel like this season was just delaying the inevitable? Mainly the issues between the two universes and trying to save them?

That being said, I have enjoyed this season and this episode. I liked the Observer's apartment too.

In the original "over there" universe, alt-Lincoln had a thing for alt-Livia. But in this version, alt-Lincoln doesn't seem to look at her the same way.

I don't know Aragorn, I almost got this impression that this version of Lincoln sort of had a thing going for Dunham as well. I could be wrong, but I think he would've been just as happy if Peter had never appeared in Reiden Lake.

At this point, I'm just curious to see how much of the timeline is going 'reset' back to it's original configuration before this is all over.
