French lawmakers Approve Full Veil Ban

You have to take into account the latent francophobia that permeates a lot of American thought.
Oh, so latent islamophobia is the reason France is doing this. The pieces are coming together.

French public schools must save a lot of time, skipping over all that "wasteful" diversity training.

It's a Halloween costume ,and nothing more!

And why come to advanced countries if your going to build your own version of the third world.

Oh, right, we're just back to making assumptions about Muslims all being immigrants.

You French are like the freaking Borg. Stripping away people's individual cultures and identity.

We just think that being French comes before being a Christian or being I don't know what. I do have an individual identity, I just have other ways than my origin or my religion to express it.

^^ Well, then you better get to work on banning the cross. A lot of people believe that it symbolizes oppression.

I think that all the religions are oppressive anyway but at least no one is walking daily in the street wearing big and obvious crosses.

I see people wearing big and obvious crosses around their necks all the time! Sure they're not covering their face, but a lot of the time it's not exactly subtle.

Yeah but you're in the USA. You're fanatics compared to us

Yeah, lots of people wear crosses. And a lot of Jews wear Yarmulkes. Hassidic Jews wear distinctive beards. All these must be banned.

Hey it goes for them too.

Go live in the Middle East ,and see what happens to you for speaking up.

Suddenly being asked to take the veil off won't be so bad.

Identifying yourself by your religion is no different than identifying yourself by your country.

I'm interested in how isolated the French really are.

Do you ever do any celebrations of outside cultures or do you just pretend they don't exist? It seems you legislate uniformity in public in hopes of keeping outside cultures in private.

Not unlike someone in government insisting gays not display public affection because it unnerves them.

If we're trying to isolate ourselves, it's not working very well

Culture can take a lot of forms, not only the religious one.

Immigrants can bring all their wonderful cuisine, I'm more than happy with this form of culture :) Mhhh :)

Meanwhile female journalists are wearing head scarves when covering stories in Arab countries. When choosing to visit/live in another country it's only polite to respect the culture in place so that makes sense to me.

France is very protective of the French culture. Right or wrong that's just the way it is and it doesn't take much to figure that out BEFORE moving there. Sure there were things I missed as an American while living there - running to the store in sweats/sneakers, turkey on Thanksgiving, etc. (although my French roommate changed her mind about shoes with traction one icy day when she had to maintain a death grip on my arm to keep from falling but that's another story...) but not only was I there for the experience of cultural immersion but life was just easier when I didn't wear blue jeans and attempted to speak the language.

As for the garment in question I don't think women should be forced to wear it but ideally if it's a personal choice then that's another thing. In fact, I've read some find it liberating to be able to move around without being physically evaluated by every man on the street. While that's an experiment I think it would be interesting to try I would not try it on the streets of Paris any more than I would sing "Yankee Doodle" while walking down the street in Atlanta or wear expensive jewelry in an impoverished country. Some actions are just plain gauche.
