FreeNAS + TVersity

I recently started cobbing spare computer parts together to build another computer because I was bored and having a file server would be cool. I currently have 4 hard drives in my desktop and with another box I could move the heat and noise to another room. My first thought was to install FreeNAS on a compactflash card and serve my files over the router. It then occured to me that I also share these files on my desktop over TVersity (UPnP media server) to play them on my PS3. This ofcourse requires Windows XP/Vista, which requires a full blown computer (no CF card boot).

My question is, is there some low overhead, minimal program/linux distro/etc. that would allow both the small footprint of FreeNAS and the media streaming abilities of TVersity? I've done some research online and i'm not seeing anything that would come close to fitting on a flash card. Perhaps I should just build a windows box and do it that way...

Well, I'm really not qualified to answer this question, but I'll give it a go anyway. What are the "media streaming abilities" that you want for your NAS? What are the PS3 interface needs? Would it be sufficient to have the data available to the network using NFS? Does the PS3 have (or can you install) any programs like VLC that will handle network streaming?

What I'm getting at is, I don't know much about media streaming or NASes, but if you give me some info about what you want I'd be willing to see if I can find anything that might help you. :)
