Free "The Tick" (live action) on Hulu - some thoughts/reviews

Egads - The Tick minisodes, for the pilot, "The Terror", "Arthur, Interrupted", "The License" and "Couples"! I won't stand for any abridging of the excellent first two epiosdes, but the four-minute versions of the others are, to be honest, better uses of one's time than watching the whole things.

Another Keeper!

5. Arthur Needs Space: The send-off gag falls flat, but the rest is very funny indeed.

I adored both the animated series and the live-action series.

Sure, some of the changes were lame regardless of their reasoning, but the characters were still great and I really admired the casting job. Batmanuel's interaction with Captain Liberty (was that really the best play on American Maid they could come up with though?) never failed to make me laugh, and Liz Vassey was certainly easy on the eyes. I even enjoyed Arthur a lot more than I did in the animated series, but they could have had more bunny jokes. Especially since he did look more like a bunny in the live-action series.

They had plenty of great puns and jokes (I still laugh at how the League of Superheroes refused to admit Tiny Man because he wasn't tiny enough) and Patrick Burton was just fantastic casting as the Tick. He nailed the role perfectly, though the writers could have toned down how stupid and erratic he was -- it's not as funny when it's all he does.

Overall, both were great shows. I wish the live-action series had done better and it had the chance to mature a bit, but c'est la vie.

Interesting that Liz Vassey ended up in Joss Whedon's Evil League of Evil as "Fury Laika". :)

Another No, Thanks:

9. The Big Leagues: some great elements and funny Superman jokes, but too predictable.

That only leaves The Tick vs. Justice... and then I'll have seen 'em all...

Seriously, don't waste hours of your life watching the live-action version; watch the cartoon series off YouTube or whatever.

But...but...it has Liz Vassey!

She's always a treat on CSI, especially last week's Trek homage. I liked how they spoofed "The Gamesters of Triskelion" and "The Cage."

I agree with V. The cartoon series is brilliant, as are the comics. The tv show is almost unwatchable. I watched it when it first aired and waited and waited for it to feel something like the cartoon I loved; it never even came close.

A No, Thanks for "The Tick vs. Justice" too, I'm afraid.

Final tally:

Keepers
1. Pilot: very funny, and a Christopher Lloyd cameo to boot!
2. The Terror: wonderful follow-up to the pilot; inventive and laugh-out-loud funny.
7. The Funeral: Risque and engaging, though the b-plot isn't quite as strong as the a-.
5. Arthur Needs Space: The send-off gag falls flat, but the rest is very funny indeed.

No, Thanks
3. Arthur, Interrupted: worth a watch, but only one. Promising premise, uneven results.
4. The License: intermittently fun non-origin story, but ultimately too light on plot.
6. Couples: That was Ron Perlman? Snore. Skip entirely.
8. The Tick Vs. Justice: intriguingly dark, but too many loose ends, and nary a joke.
9. The Big Leagues: some great elements and funny Superman jokes, but too predictable.

Ultimately, imo, if you loved the Pilot and are willing to sit through a few uneven twenty-minute stretches, "Couples" is the only ep not worth even a single viewing.

And yes, the world needs much more Liz Vassey.
