Free Games!

And for Epic's last giveaway of the season they seem to be ending with a bang! The entire Tomb Raider second reboot trilogy (Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider & Shadow of the Tomb Raider) is up for grabs for free, for the next 24 hours.

I really enjoyed the first entry, and the second one has been on my Steam backlog for a while after picking it up in a bundle last year but I have been looking forward to getting to it, so it's nice to be able to also add the third entry to my backlog too, this time without any shame of sitting on something I actually payed for for so long!

^ Must be popular, the store is really sluggish today. I had a couple of backlogged steam as well but these are definitive edition so still worthwhile.

For anyone seeing this they're available until 1/6, not just 24 hours like the last ones.

^Basically.

Though in my case "like" is a strong word since I have no particular affection for or aversion to it. It's no where near as tuned a client as steam, but I've certainly had to deal with worse ones (still can't get XCom 2 to launch because of 2K's shite client software.)

And yeah, it's hard to argue with a small mountain of free games over the last few years. A lot of them are just mediocre indie fare that I'll probably never get to, but there's also been a fair few gems that I genuinely wanted to play, and probably will now . . . evetually.

Only 3 repeats this year, Remnant: From the Ashes, Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden & Control...
Last year almost half where repeats...

On the other hand: free is free. You don't have to like the platform to take advantage of it. Every major platform engages in some kind of shady bullshit or another (yes, even the precious Valve) so I'm not about to start dying on a hill for any of them.

There is a new open source driving simulator that may find its way into games:
https://techxplore.com/news/2022-06-open-source-photorealistic-simulator-autonomous.html

"...scientists from MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) created "VISTA 2.0," a data-driven simulation engine where vehicles can learn to drive in the real world and recover from near-crash scenarios. What's more, all of the code is being open-sourced to the public."

Maybe useful for real
