Frasier question

Yeah, in fact, wasn't there an episode where Niles had gotten into a wine tasting club first and that he had been part of the wine community before Frasier?

Yes that is odd.

Frasier didn't seem much interested in hanging out at a bar like Duke's or McGinty's (as his dad did). Yet that's exactly what he did for many years at Cheers.
Hmmm...

Makes sense; you could see the old Frasier come out whenever he was hanging out with one of his old Cheers buddies in the eps where they brought one of them back.

Indeed. In Cheers when he was home with Lilith or with some other high-society type we saw hints of that pompousness and like for "finer" things. Hell there were even moments he had that at the bar but for the most part he was able to be "one of the guys" and even managed to one-up them at times. (See the one where the guys send him on the "snipe hunt.")

Once home in Seattle he was in much higher and white-collar society, and a bit of a local celebrity, so he fell into those ways. We saw him revert back whenever someone from Cheers stopped by or when he visited them (during Cliff's retirement back in Boston, I think?) but overall in Seattle he was more of that pompous ass.

Now they weren't great at showing this transition. I recall an early episode where Frasier and Niles go with their dad to a steak-house restaurant and Frasier seems quite put-off there despite having spent the last 8 years or so in the exact same type of environment. Though, again, it's possible his attitude changed by being there around Niles.

The two were obviously very competitive.

It looks and seems obvious, but you never know. But Frasier was the elder brother, right?

he mostly drank conyack <(if that's the right spelling) or wine he rarelly drank beer.

I found it funny that some of bar patron who were regular's were actual producer's of the show.

The problem with these theories are that there was an episode in which Frasier ended up drinking a beer at the place his dad drank at, and he went "I can get used to this..." or something like that.

Used to it?! He was drinking a beer every day for 9 years!

Yeah, he could have been meaning getting used to the idea of drinking at the same bar, rather than the beer itself. There are a lot of subtleties like that that don't get noticed the first time around.

I think Niles had a big impact in that regard. When Frasier moved back he was confronted by the fact that Niles was a rich, successful snob and Frasier's competitive side kicked in again making him want to become a bigger snob than Niles.
I believe frasier was much like his brother in the early days till he met diane. and then his life went in the craper after she left at the alter. rember he hit rock bottom after that and to start over from nothing.

Wonder if the character would have proved as enduring or popular had he been played by the first choice for the role, John Lithgow.

It would be spelled Cognac (not a snide remark or anything, I swear). Yeah, his beer drinking was rare, though, on occasion he would enjoy it if it were "highbrow" enough. I think he actually enjoyed beer, but was too determined to protect his image to admit to such.

I think that tradition carried over into Frasier as well. It is neat, though.

Not sure, honestly Frasier in of himself was an odd character base a spin-off around. But I think there's just something about Kelsey Grammar's acting style and what he brought to Frasier that made it work. His voice and manner of acting just sort of reeks that of someone who knows and acts like he's smarter than you.

Not sure Lithgow could have pulled that off but 3rd Rock From the Sun and Santa Claus: The Movie are likely clouding my mind.

Two of the producers of Price is Right is named Michael Richards and Adam Sandler

Well, Adam Sandler isn't so common, but Micheal Richards strikes me as moreso since it's essentially two common names, so that one isn't too surprising. To confuse the issue, Adam Sandler has actually been on the Price is Right.

It's like all of these possible alternate casting choices (Selleck as Indiana Jones, McGoohan as 007, etc)- you get used to whoever lands the role and you see in it. Lithgow would have been excellent but his Frasier would have been different from Grammer. But his Frasier would have been the one we know and love, in this alternate-casting universe.

Of course, as Lithgow had a more ongoing movie career than Kelsey throughout the 1980s and 1990s, it's less likely that he would have been available to appear in Cheers as a headliner and thus the character probably wouldn't have ended up with his own show.

I never even knew he was a possible choice. I think we should all be thankful that the casting choices went the way they did though, as I can't see Tom Selleck as Indiana Jones, and it likely wouldn't have been as successful. It's not to say I don't like Tom Selleck, but he doesn't seem to really fit the part, and we got more Magnum out of it.

It does make you wonder though how things would have been though.
