News Frakes: Get Ready For A Shift In Third Season Of Discovery

I think a lighter tone might benefit the show. I do hope they expand upon the other characters though, especially Stamets and Culber.

A lot of critics have said the show has been Burnham-centric since day one. Is Frakes insinuating it'll be even more about her?

Jonathan Frakes said:
Discovery has primarily to do with Sonequa‘s character, as you’ll see,”

Of course,

Jonathan Frakes said:
“At the end of Season Two, we flash-forwarded I think nine-hundred-and-thirty years. Michael Burnham has found a new core, not to mention a new partner in crime.”

In other words, character change because they're trying to invigorate ratings. Having all 10 episodes of her juggling the Del Rubio triplets won't improve things just because of stunts and stunt casting... or changing executive producers a dozen times per year too, I never got much of a sense the show had any substantial core to begin with. Some great ideas are there but never quite meshes. (For me anyway, YMMV.)

The show will have a breakout season, or it will break. It's not unusual for shows to need a season or two to gel. TNG's a prime example.

Given it's not a prequel as such anymore, I've fingers crossed they might have found a new stride. I'll likely check out Pensky File and certain other review channels I'll scope out first; a few are also avoidable as I've discovered...

The photo also shows Tilly, so - why not - they might be suggesting it'll be the "Michael and Tilly ****ing Cool Comedy Hour, starring The Power of Math People Dancers". :guffaw:

I hope they get rid of the emperor quickly and don't use certain previous aliens just for background parts

I think for the type of series it wants to be, with the title it has, the kind of stakes it wants to have, and the spore drive being the ship's main identifying feature, taking Discovery out of the 23rd Century was the smartest move. Having it set way passed the 24th/25th Century was a smart move too. They can do what they want without wondering how it will impact Picard.

The spore drive and the fact that they're from a different time with different ideas will be what makes Discovery distinct in the new setting it's in.

I probably should have mentioned 'Voyager' and 'Season 3' in the same sentence at the risk of conjuring that guy who thinks Kes is the greatest star trek character to ever star trek.

That makes sense. By this era, transwarp, transwarp beaming and quantum slipstream drive should be widespread, but the way the spore drive jumps the ship is still different from these.

With the Trek universe expanding so much, I'm not surprised. Discovery continues to be the trailblazer of modern Trek 930 years into the future, light years away from the rest. Discovery's place as "23rd century space adventure" is gonna be taken by Section 31 and the worst kept secret since Benedict Cumberbatch's part in Star Trek Into Darkness, the Pike series.

If it's an era where the Federation has collapsed, or at suffered some form of major catastrophe, they may not have anything other than warp.
