Fox to redo 'Absolutely Fabulous'

I expect it'll turn out like the remake of Red Dwarf.

They'll yet again completely miss the point and show lack of understanding at what makes a British comedy "funny".

Yeah, I remember reading a report a few years back about how Fox were going to redo Blackadder, but transpose it to modern day New York

I mean did they even watch the original show? :wtf:

ooh goodie, there is no way this can go wrong ;)

You're kidding...right?
no I was being sarcastic

Oooh, looks like someone already beat them to it...

I recognise Kim Cattrall and (I think?) Sarah Jessica Parker, but who are the other two?
im not expert but im guessing its the cast of Sex & the City

Well, there's The Office I guess.
The second Bill Cosby show was a remake of One Foot in the Grave.
And there are a few others.

A few? Sanford and Son? All in the Family?

There are actually a lot of successful remakes of British TV shows, a lot people don't even realize. There does seem to be more crap than good stuff, but I doubt it's a more biased ratio than the regular crap:good quotient found in plain old American "cancelled after three episodes" TV.

We can, however, basically blame the entire reality TV market on the Brits. :klingon:

As long as they get the original cast to play their parts, I'll give this a shot. :bolian:

They tried to do a remake of "Coupling" in America. They even used the original British scripts. What could go wrong, you may ask?

The casting.

It flopped so bad, they didn't even get past the "pilot" episode.

Trekker, you should try 'Red Dwarf' and 'The IT Crowd', they're both really funny, and you'd be able to relate to them.

As for 'AbFab', i didn't like the original, because of the whole selfish "me, me, me" attitude of the main character. I know that was the point, but I find it one of the least attractive atributes in the human character. Same reason I don't like K&K. And the US version of that show is really ugly.

^^^

You Brits are so over emotional.

Actually, I'm Australian.

And aren't you the person who got into a six page argument with posters over how you believe Sam Neil is the devil because he acted in an Omen film and thus should not have been cast in JP?!?

I was going to call YOU over emotional but the term "psychotically deluded" somehow seems more appropriate.

You really need to insult a whole group of people because someone thinks a TV show remake is a bad idea?

Stop with the lameness, now. This is your second friendly in a week from me. If you keep making trouble in Gen TV & Media and derailing threads and passing out insults, I'm going to make like the Enterprise Mod I used to be and start dishing out warnings. So play nice with others, or don't play at all.

And others, please don't take the bait. ;) Thanks.

On topic, this is one of my mom's all time favorite shows, but I can't see a remake being a great idea. The humor in the show feels so uniquely British to me. But the US version of The Office is great in a totally different way from the brilliant British original, so who knows? Saunders being in on it is promising.

I have the pilot on VHS. Painful! And I also recall the horror that was the American version of Coupling.

On a related note, Bob Spiers, who directed every episode of AbFab in its heyday (plus several other classic comedies in the past including Fawlty Towers and NTNOCN) died a few days ago. :(

Let's hope a US remake of AbFab will do the original show justice and be unique in itself, much like The Office USA managed. :)

^ My thinking exactly. One of the major points of the original AbFab was not to be PC. These were two terrible awful people going about their daily lives as if they were the pinnacle of hip and mod when they were anything but. What made it funny was their outrageous behavior. What made it brilliant were the life lessons that these two aging alcoholic WASP's failed to learn. Time and time again they could have found the happiness they sought if they could stop living in this plastic microcosm that they had created for themselves. To me, the fact the original show is utterly hilarious yet so very very sad is what made it a favorite of mine.

And I hate to say it... even with the talented Mitch Hurwitz as a producer... an American redo has me more than a little worried. He did manage to pull off Arrested Development and it was filled with horrible (yet lovable) characters and numerous un-PC moments so I will give it a chance first before making a final decision. Who knows. He might just pull it off.

^ Well said, AS. You've nailed exactly why I disliked it. The failure to learn lessons time and time again. And that is incredibly sad. As in makes me want to weep.

Maybe that';s just me. I'ver seen too many chances missed IRL by a number of people to find the funny in seeing them squandered.

^ I can accept that... of course I can accept almost anything coming from a person with a Dylan Moran quote in his sig. Now that guy is one funny Irishman and I love his hair.

And for you folks out there who enjoy British Comedy, I would most definitely recommend viewing Dylan's Black Books. Excellent.

As for AbFab, I admit it is an acquired taste. But once you get hooked... ;)

Hopefully, he will pull it off, and it might be a success.

I wished that this American version could have got off of the ground a long time ago, so that Jennifer Saunders wouldn't have had to write more seasons of AbFab just so the Americans could see more, even though this happened:
I loved the fact that Saffron threw out both her mom and Patsy in the final episode

This was, and is, a good idea-at least I think and hope so-and as I said before, I hope that the same spirit seen in the original show will be in this new version.
