FOX FALL 2011-12 SCHEDULE

Terra Nova and Alcatraz seem like interesting new shows which have a lot of potential. That usually means Fox sill cancel them within their first season.

People are still clinging to the idea that Fox is especially likely to cancel freshman shows, but in the last 10 years Fox has actually had lower first season cancellation rates than ABC and NBC.

They canceled Firefly but renewed a piece of crap like Dollhouse. That kinda tells you a thing or three.

Different people were in charge of Fox when Firefly aired. Plus they didn't factor a lot of things like DVR and online viewing into their decisions back then. And Firefly likely cost a lot more per episode than Dollhouse did.

Opinions on the quality of the shows varies (I liked both), but the fact remains that their first season cancellation rates have been lower than those of ABC and NBC over the last 10 years. The new management in particular has been more likely to give shows with marginal ratings another chance, although they handed out more cancellations this season as they had a particularly good development slate.

FOX really screwed up with 'Breaking In' they announce they are canceling it and then move the finale to another night...most people didn't hear of the move and some affiliates were still advertising it being after American Idol...this is based on what I have read from other fans so...but I still think FOX could have handled it better.

And the Terra Nova thing does not change history? I could watch it just to see the solution to that.

They won't bother to provide a solution. There are a number of hypothetical solutions that don't result in any grandfather paradox but nothing a network series audience would care about. People will be watching to root for the dinos to eat someone.

My quatloos say...Terra Nova goes down (sappy family and high costs will kill it), Alcatraz is renewed (looks like a good balance between procedural and mystery elements).

If they publicize Terra Nova like a TV blockbuster, it might be hugely popular because of the apparently mass appeal way it's being produced. That, and the sunk costs already incurred and the need to save face, might mean this show stand a good chance.

Alcatraz would need actual substance, and even that alone does not guarantee it a second season.

There's no such thing as a "TV blockbuster" in the movie sense. The TV blockbusters are sadly all reality TV, sitcoms and procedurals.

It's much easier to grab an audience with dinos when you have a huge screen, surround sound, and only have to amuse them for two hours. Doing the same with a small screen, distractions all over the place, and needing to keep it up indefinitely sounds like something else entirely. Plus you aren't allowed to spend nearly as much money.

Terra Nova
is a very big risk that could easily fail once the novelty of the dinos wears off, and everyone is left wondering why they're watching a show about an annoying whiny family that doesn't have the good grace to get eaten. :D
