Fourth of July.

It has to do with America and when it declared Independence. Just because the country has grown since then doesn't mean the newer states can't celebrate.

Please dont get defensive - i am just fascinated/interested in the US and that..it grew (like all countries really)...but the fourth of july kinda just relates to the eastern states. To me, thats fascinating.

The Fourth of July has to do with the then existing states declaring independence from Great Britain. The only British territories not to join were the Canadian territories and Caribbean territories. It has to do with the other states in the sense that they would not exist without independence. They were part of Spanish territory at this time (Louisiana went to Spain after the Seven Years War and then was given back to Napoleon who sold it to the United States), but it was land sparsely occupied by Europeans. The overwhelming majority of the population of these states were settled by descendants of those from the original 13 colonies.

Nope, not defensive at all. But yes, it's true. At the time, we only had the original states. The rest joined the union later.

No, it has to do with the whole country because the Declaration of Independence built the foundation of the country by setting up the values it's built on - "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." That's America in a nutshell. It's also among the most influential sentences ever written down.

Indeed. It borrows heavily from jurisprudential documents written after the French and English revolutions. And of course the Magna Carta (Which i went to visit the other day in the British Library in London...it was amazing).
