Happy Fourth of July, everyone.

This is the anniversary of the start of the American Revolution, but we have to remember that the revolution is not over. The Founding Fathers started it, Emancipation, Women's Suffrage and the Civil Rights Era built upon it, and we must all continue that work until everybody is included and nobody is left behind.

But for now you can all have the day off.

Well, not me. I try to always say "Happy Independence Day" as that's what the holiday is and it means that much to me. Make no sense to parse it down to its date anymore than it would for any other holiday.

Wrong king, wrong date, wrong event, and even if it was accurate, of no relation to American independence unless they had 18th century CNN to broadcast the news of the Declaration across the pond to King George the same day.

A Historic Misquote

Those of you with a keen ear may have noticed that this year our reading of the Declaration of Independence has a different ending. In the past we've said that "on July 4th, 1776, George III, king of England, wrote in his diary, 'Nothing of importance happened today.'"

Turns out we were taken in by an old historic myth.

"King George III never kept a diary," says Arnold Hunt, curator of historical manuscripts at the British Library. "The quote is a variation of another well-known story from the French revolution," he says.

On July 14, 1789 — the date of the storming of the Bastille — Louis XVI of France wrote in his diary "rien (nothing)." Hunt says Louis was referring to a hunting trip where he came back empty-handed.

Over the years, the story found its way into the folklore of George III and into our radio piece ... until now. We have declared our independence from this historic misquote.

Damn and thanks, I stand corrected.

I guess it's the same as Marie Antoinette and the whole "Let them eat cake" comment which was according to Stephen Fry on QI (and obviously accredited to some historian before that) the term was used some twenty or so years before her birth. It makes more sense that the nothing important quote is accredited to the French and not "us."

I know of no holiday called the "Fourth of July."

I do know of one called "Independence Day" that happens to fall on the 4th of July but in honor of what the holiday means should never be called that.

You were one of those kids who got stuffed in the locker after criticizing the teacher for having a class party for the wrong reasons back in the 4th grade, right?

Happy Fourth of July to my fellow Americans, and thank you to all of our international members who are wishing us well.

I Don't have any big plans for today. I'm having dinner with a friend later, but I'm mostly going to be busy packing up my things and cleaning (I'm trying to move back to Missouri by next week).

BBQ, Beer, Fireworks, and Family; each a greater potential recipe for disaster, in that order.

We're heading over to my grandma's house and having a party with the extended family, so we go all out with steak, chicken, burgers, and hot dogs. Then usually badminton, volleyball, and water balloon toss (into pillow cases) for everyone to work off the food they just ate. Then fireworks after that and s'mores by the backyard firepit.

I hope everyone has a fun and safe holiday, and thanks to all the well-wishers.

We're having the extended family over for a BBQ, so we're hoping the rain has stopped for good. Later on, the little kids and I will plop down in front of the TV to watch Keith Lockhart's Magnificent Butt and the Boston Pops Orchestra and sing along with the Patriotic Medley. (And I will once again make futile promises to go to the Esplanade next year.)
